It was a national holiday as Buddha’s Birthday in Korea. In Korea, every Buddest temple celebrates this day as “The Day Buddha came”and they put “lotus flower lanterns”to decorate their temples.

[The date of Buddha’s birdthday is different in Japan and the rest of the world. In Japan, it is celebrated on April 8 of Western calendar, but in Korea, and other countries in the world, according to Chinese calendar (or lunar calendar).]
George Furst, the leader of Taejonhikers does not like to climb any mountains with many visitors to the temple, so he avoided the mountains with temples and decided to climb Mt. Gappa for this day.
In the morning on my way to KAIST, I found a pheasant in the hill behind KAIST dormitories. When I stopped my bicycle, and tried to take a picture, the pheasant also noticed me and we looked at each other.

When I took some pictures, the pheasant turned back and went into the bush and cried an unique cry.
There are a dozen of big white birds like swans in the pond of KAIST. I saw a pair of such birds with a lot of ducklings.

When they landed, I approached toward them. Then the big one posed as “attacking” me to protect its small ones. I was surprised and amazed at its parental instinct.
However, when I arrived at KAIST Main Gate, I saw Mr. Miki, a Japanese hiker. There were 4 Koreans and George Furst (USA), Tracey (Australia) and JZ (China) joined me.

We went to Gyeryong Service Area, and parked our cars. Then began walking toward Gappasan.
In front of the big map near the bridge, George Furst explained the hikes as A course and B course.

There were beautiful flowers on the fense of the houses at the foot of the mountain.

Last time when I climbed this mountain, it was March 1st last year, with Alan England and other Taejonhikers. Memories of the hike came back to me.
The most difficult part of the hike was from the foot of the mountain to the 380.6 peak (it must be 380.6 meter altitude.)
We had a short break before the peak in the woods.

When I reached at the ridge, the trail became gentle and I could see the highways connecting Daejeon and Gongju from the ridge.

We reached at the top of the mountain a little past noon. Tracey looked exhausted because of the humidity.

We had lunch at the bench on the peak of the mountain. George put his pet, Pipi on the tree, and Pipi looked like a coala bear!

After lunch, we separted ourselves into two groups; A couse and B course. All Koreans took A course and all non-Koreans took B course.

It was nice talking with Mr. Miki in Japanese. And it was also good for me to know JZ since I am studying Chinese.

JZ works at the same institute of Mr. Miki (NFRI). He is from Fujian (福建省). Later he said he climbed 小五台山 near Beijing.

I hope I had a chance to visit 小五台山 in the future. However, I was planning to climb 五台山 in Korea next week.
We came back to KAIST by George Furst’s car. It was around 3 p.m.
On the way back home, I saw many herons in their nests in the woods of KAIST.

It was my 28th hike for this year and as Taejonhikers’ 7th hike in the year of 2012.

この日は韓国ではお釈迦様の誕生日[석가탄신일(釋迦誕辰日)]とされ、公休日である。一般には「お釈迦様が来られた日(부처님 오신 날)としてすべての仏教のお寺では横断幕が張られ、ぼんぼりが飾られ、信徒が奉納する蓮花灯(연화등)が飾られる。

テジョンハイカーズの外国人リーダーであるジョージ・ファーストは寺のある山々の雑踏を嫌い、あえて寺のない甲下山を選んだ。
さて、この日、私は珍しい鳥を見た。新城洞からKAISTへ行く途中、KAIST寄宿舎裏山の畑に野生のキジが出ているのを見つけのだ。

キジの写真を撮ろうとしたら、キジも私に気づき、にらみ合いになった。私が5倍のズームを最大にして写真をとると、キジは身を翻し、薮の中に入って、『カターン』と一声啼いた。
KAISTの池には白鳥のような水鳥がいる。アヒルより明らかに大型で、親子連れて泳いでいた。
陸に上がったところを写真に撮ろうとしたら、親鳥らしき成鳥がなんと首を伸ばして私の方に攻撃の姿勢を見せた。子を守ろうとする親の本能に感心した。

さて、10時10分前にKAIST正門の駐車場に到着。久しぶりに日本人の三木さんが来ていた。
今回のメンバーは韓国人4人(ウォンジョン、ナムギョン、ソ・ソンヒョン、アエラ)と外国人5人(ジョージ・ファースト、トレイシー、朱建州(JZ)、三木さんと私)でジョニーは前回で懲りたか、今回は不参加。
鶏龍休憩所に車を停め、甲洞の橋のたもとの案内板には10:44に到着。ジョージ・ファーストがこの日のハイキングの説明をした。

コースは２つで甲洞から甲下山(469m)まで登山して昼食をとり、その後そのまま引き返すAコースと、甲下山から尾根伝いにさらに進み雨傘峰(573m)まで登山してもどるBコースだ。

前回この山に登ったのは昨年の3月1日で午後からの半日、甲下山のみのAコースだった。今回は午前10時集合なので、山頂で昼食をとり、更に雨傘峰まで行くオプションを計画したわけだ。

このコースでは最初の甲洞テサコル(대사골)から380.6峰までが急こう配が続いて厳しい。歩き始めて約45分ほど進んだ380.6峰の手前の林の中で最初の休憩をとった。
稜線に出ると足元に鶏龍山や東鶴寺へ続く道路がみえ、登山路も勾配が緩くなり快適だ。
甲下山山頂には12:07に到着。暑さからかトレイシーが一番疲れたようだった。

山頂にはヘリポートがあり、ベンチもある。そこで昼食を拡げた。
ジョージがピピを木の枝にまたがらせる悪戯をしたが、ピピはコアラの従兄弟のようにみえた。

昼食後そのまま引き返すAコースとさらに進むBコースに分かれたが、私はブログの整理が途中だったので早くワンルームに戻りたく、Aコースを希望した。

結局、韓国人ハイカー4人がBコースで残り5人はAコースをとった。久しぶりに会った三木さんと日本語で会話できるのはいいものだ。
また、朱建州さん(JZ)と初めて会い、新しい中国人の友人となる可能性ができたのもうれしい。JZは福建省の出身で今年3月に大田へきたばかり。職場はアランや三木さんと同じNFRI(核融合研究所)だそうだ。

我々5人はジョージ・ファーストの車でKAISTへ3時前に戻った。
KAIST内の森にはシラサギの巣が多数あり、頭の色が茶色っぽい雛鳥が多数、よく見えた。キジで始まりシラサギで終わったハイキングだった。

今回は今年28回目の登山でテジョンハイカーズとしては今年7回目。
