Trekking Place: Jejudo
Trekking Course: Olle-gil #1 (Shihun Beech – Female Diver’s Home – Seongsan Watergate – Gwangchigi Beech
Partner: 50 AhToSan members including Chris (USA) and Alex (Bulgarian)
AhToSan plans the trip to Jeju Island almost every year, but mostly during the winter. It must be the first time to climb Mt. Hallasan in June.
This trip consists of two big points. 1) To walk “Olle-gil” on the first day, 2) To climb Mt. Halla from Donnaeko on the 2nd day.
“Olle-gil” means “narrow alley” in local language, and there are more than 20 courses available by now.
This time, we took the 1st course of “Olle-gil”along the sea-shore.
I set up my alarm clock at 3:50. Alex, who lives in Daegu, came to my studio apartment on previous night. We took a taxi from Shinseongdong to Expo South Gate.
We chartered two buses sharing with other hiking clubs in Daejeon. AhToSan was the largest club, having 51 participants this time.

We left Daejeon at 5 am and arrived at Mokpo at around 8 am. Chris joined us at the restaurant in Mokpo. Since he lives in Seoul, he came to Mokpo on previous night and stayed at a hotel there.

It was a nice breakfast with mostly sea-products. After having lunch, we went to the international terminal of Mokpo Harbor.
On the ferry boat, I saw several old AhToSan members, who broke up from AhToSan and joined a new club “Puruna”

Soon after putting our baggage at the room for many people (about 30 persons) we went to the back part of the ship with foods and drinks and we began the 1st party there.

AhToSan staff members prepared a lot of chikens while I bought pig's trotters on the previous day for this purpose. My AhToSan friends enjoyed having “pettitoes” with soju very much.
I enjoyed the draft beer (3000 won per 500cc glass).after having makgeolli and soju.
I also enjoyed the fantastic scenes of funny shaped islands with fog on the surface of the ocean.

The ferry boat was supposed to arrive at Jeju at 13:00, but because of the wrong tidal stream, we arrived at the port at 13:45.

Soon after landing the island, we went to a restaurant on the island and had lunch there. Then we began trekking at Shinhun Sea-shore, a beautiful beach with a lot of wihite birds (egret/heron?).

The first things I noticed when I got off the bus were squids fishermen drying along the roads.

We walked leisurely along the beech toward “Seongsan Ilchulbong”which is a big crater (600m daiameter, 100m high.)

Along the way, I noticed a big tent on which “Congratulations on XX Grandma’100th Birth Day!”was written.
I also noticed two rafts in the bay near the Watergate.

Not many, but some members including the president of AhToSan, climbed “Seongsan Ilchubong.”Alex climbed the mountain with this group. The view from the mountain was nice.

I arrived at the end of the trekking course earlier, because I shortened the time by riding the chairtered bus (for about 2 km.)

So I walked around the nearby beech alone. I found a stone memorial for the victims of 4.3 Incident (the uprising of communists on April 3, 1954 and the massacar of islanders followed by the uprising. It is said that 60,000 islanders were killed by the government forces and the police.)

The first group people really like party. When I went to the beech alone, they were having party at a gazebo near the beech. I was invited to join their party and they fed me some delicious food such as “sashimi” of sarmon, and a glass of beer.
When I came bac to the bus after having a walk near the memorial stone, they were having another party in front of the bus. This time, they fed me “pyeonyuk”or slices of boiled meat, and soju.

The last group arrived at the bus at 6:30 pm. They were the ones who climbed up to the peak of the mountain “Il-chul-bong.” The very last persons were “Sanjigi”and his wife. They arrived at the bus at 6:35.

We went to the Hotel Shanghai at 7:30. Alex and I shared a room with 2 beds. Most of AhToSan members shared a room with 5 persons. So, I was to share a room with Alex for 3 nights.
After having a dinner, we went to our room and we went to bed, soon. Some of AhToSan members had the final party of the day at 9 pm. We did not join the party, rather, took a good rest at night.

アトサンはほぼ毎年済州島旅行・漢拏山登山を企画しているが、毎年冬の漢拏山登山であり、この時期に企画したのは初めてである。
今回の目玉は第2日目の漢拏山登山のほか、第1日目のオルレキルのトレッキングである。オルレキルのコースは2010年までに21コース設定されたが今回は元祖の第1コースを歩いた。
さて、目覚しは3時50分に設定。前夜、私のワンルームに泊まったアレックスと共に4時10分に出てタクシーで南門へ向かった。我々が第1号だった。
バスが4時30分ごろきたが、アトサンとは書いていない。これは他の山岳会と合同でバス2台をチャーターしたためだ。
すぐにチョンダウンが来た。ほとんどの会員が4:50までに到着。バスは5時きっかりに出発した。
木浦まで途中2回ほど休憩し、木浦には8時少し前に着いた。朝食は木浦の食堂で食べた。予め食堂を聞いていたらしいクリスが食堂で合流。(クリスはソウルから前夜木浦へ来て旅館に泊まった。)

朝食後、バスに置いた荷物をすべて持って国際ターミナルへ向かった。済州島行きのフェリーは国際ターミナルから出る。
各自の名前が印刷された乗船券を七甲山が配布した。どうもコニーのらしいチケットが余ったのは旅行社の手違いか。

乗船時に旧アトサン(現プルナ)会員を何人か見かけた。隣の船室にはタルマジと雪花のなつかしい顔があった。

アトサンの会員の大部分は後部のレストランに隣接したデッキ上のテーブルに陣取って船上パーティを開始した。私も前日１万ウォンで購入した「チョッパル」を提供した。

また、ニンニクの茎を切ったものと、コッチュジャンを提供したが、これはどうもマッコリにあうものらしい。アトサンが持参した飲み物はすべて冷えた焼酎で、これもうまかった。
途中で、レストラン内で販売している生ビールに換えて酒盛りを続けた。生ビールは500ccが3000ウォンでリーズナブルだ。
また、途中、2回にわたって船内のロビーで歌手が歌い、演奏者が合わせて客がダンスを踊れる場があった。見るとタルマジが踊っていて、私を招いている。私も興が乗って踊りの中に入った。まるで、昔、パク先生の結婚式の後で木浦のアジュンマたちと踊った時のようだ。

木浦を離れて1時間以上も過ぎたあたりでも島影が絶えることなく、中には立派な岩山をいだく島も多かった。

海上は良い天気で風も問題ないようにみえたが、「強い逆潮流のため到着が13:45頃」というお知らせが出て、結局船は約1時間遅れて済州港に着いた。

駐車場にはバスが3、4台、我々を待っていてすぎにバスに乗った。やや遅い昼食後、島内観光の開始だ。我々はオルレキル(올레길)#1コースを歩いたが、船が遅延した関係でコースを大幅に短縮した。

さて、昼食後、新興海岸道路でバスを降りていよいよトレッキングを開始した。バスを降りて最初に気が付いたのはみごとに干してあるイカのひらきだった。また、引き潮で露出した岩の上にはシラサギたちが餌を探していた。

海岸沿いのトレッキングコースは弾力のある素材で整備されていて歩きやすい。私は途中までクリスやアレックスを一緒だったが、彼らのペースの方が早い。水門も過ぎてかなり進んだ頃、後ろを歩いていたチョンダウン会長が号令をかけ、城山日出峰にのぼろうと言い出した。

サンサランやスマイル、それにアレックスたち数人が彼女の号令に従って登山路に入って行ったが、チョンダウンのご主人と数人はたまたま通りかかった我々の貸切バスに乗って途中を飛ばしてしまった。うかつなことに私もそれについてバスに乗ってしまい、最後の部分を飛ばして目的地の駐車場へ先回りしてしまった。(楽をしたいと言う気持ちがあったのかもしれない。)

さすがにトレッキングを終えるには早すぎて、海岸沿いに日出峰のほうにもどりかけると、海岸の見晴らしの良い場所に建てられた八角堂でアトサンの先頭グループが酒席を設けてパーティをしていて、そこに呼ばれてしまった。

おいしい生シャケの刺身とビールをごちそうになったが、長居はせず、海岸を一人で散歩した。
海岸の薮を抜けると立派な四・三事件の慰霊碑があった。済州島四・三事件は朝鮮動乱直後の1954年4月3日に起こった済州島島民の蜂起により同年9月21日まで続いた政府軍・警察による島民虐殺事件で、この時の犠牲者は島民5人に一人にあたる6万人に上ると言う。

慰霊碑の建てられた地点は城山日出峰を望む海岸沿いの風光明媚な場所で、「トジンモク4.3遺跡地」という看板が建てられていた。

先頭グループは八角亭でのパーティ後、駐車場のバスの前でさらにトッチャリを拡げて2回目の酒宴を開いていた。

今回の主なつまみはピョンユクで飲み物は冷えた焼酎。トレッキング終了時刻を過ぎた6時15分には切り上げてバスに乗車したが、城山日出峰登頂グループが案の定、遅れた。
結局彼らがバスに到着したのは6:30だった。サンチギ夫婦がさらに5分ほど遅れ、バスへの最終乗車人として皆の拍手を浴びた。
ホテルへ到着したのは7:30頃で料金の割にはかなり豪華な食事。また、部屋はアレックスとの相部屋で、クリスは一般同様5人部屋。
我々の部屋はベットのツインでやや狭いものの、これも満足がいくものだった。なによりも浴槽に入れるのがよかった。
9時過ぎに副会長から食堂で酒盛りをしているので入らないかと誘いがあったが、夜は私は弱いのでと断った。体力を考えるとこれは正解だったとおもう。
