120730 Sightseeing Guide in Hakone (箱根観光案内 하코네 관광 안내)

Sightseeing Spot: Hakone (Fji-Hakone-Izu National Park)

Sightseeing Course: Odawara – (Odakyu) – Hakone-Yumoto – (Hakone Tozan Line/Switch-back Railway) – Gora – (Cable Car) – Sōunzan – (Ropeway) – Owakudani – (Ropeway) – Togendai – (Boat) – Motohakone – (Walk) – Hakone Shrine – (Walk) – Komagatake Ropeway (Round trip) – (Bus) – Motohakone – (Bus) – Odawara

My wife prepared a quality breakfast with plenty of vegitable and nice soup. She also prepared lunch (rice balls) for us (Salangcho and me).

Salangcho took 7:04 Tokaido Line at Shimbashi and I took the same train at 7:44 at Ofuna. We went to Odawara together and changed trains there.


We bought “Hakone Free Pass” tickets at Odawara which cost 3900 yen each. If she bought the ticket in Shinjuku, using Odakyu Line, it cost 5000 yen. She paid 6200 yen for the same distance but different route (From Shimbashi to Odawara, 1450 yen + 3900 = 6200 yen), so she was not very happy about it. Next time, I should advise my guests to buy “Hakone Free Pass” at Shinjuku and meet me at Odawara or at Hakone-Yumoto.

We took Odakyu Line from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto, then “Hakone Tozan Line” or “Switch-back Train” to Gora from Hakone-Yumoto.

“Hakone Tozan Line” is famous as trains to run steepest slopes in Japan. It employs an unique method called “Switchback” or “zig zag.” It has been running since 1919.

This line is also famous for its beuty of hydrangea. The hydrangea season in Kanto area is in June, but the cooler climate helped those along the line still blooming.

We got off from the Hakone Tozan Line train at Gora and took “Cable Car” or “Funicular Railway” from Gora to Sōunzan. When we took the car, it was too crowded, and I felt just like “lifted in a crowed box” from Gora station (al. 553m) to Sōunzan (al. 767m).

Then we took the highlighted transportation for the day, “Hakone Ropeway!” From Sōunzan to Owakudani (al. 1044m), we were literally in the sky! We could see “Ōwakudani” or active volcanic valley from the above. We could also smell “sulfur” in distance.

We got off at Ōwakudani and went to see the famous sightseeing spot of volcanic smoke.

Whenever I guide my guests in Ōwakudani, I take them to the area where they sell “black eggs.” They say, “If you eat one black egg which was boiled in hot-spring there, you can expect your life extended for 7 years” but who believe it?

However people buy a pack of 5 eggs sold by 500 yen and I did too and we enjoyed eating the hot block eggs. I ate three and Salangcho ate two.

Unforetunately we could not see Mt. Fuji cleary from Ōwakudani because of many clouds. But it is normal in summer. There are always a lot of clouds around Mt. Fuji in summer.

After spending about one hour in Ōwakudani, we headed for “Togendai” from where we took a boat which shaped like “pirate ship.”

We arrived at Togendai at 11:10 and next boat was to leave at 12, noon. So we had lunch at the beach of Lake Ashinoko.

The boat was very crowded, but we took nice place to get breeze on the deck. We arrived at Motohakone at We arrived at Motohakone at 12:40.

There are many stone Buddhist statutes including “Jizo,” a god to save travelers or kids. According to the explanation board, they were Buddhist statues being moved from “shines” in the early era of Meiji in the occation of “Haibutsu kishaku” (廃仏毀釈) (literally "abolish Buddhism and destroy Shākyamuni")

There were fresh flowers of hydrangea near the port. The coler of hydrangea was just beautiful.

We walked to Hakone Shrine from Motohakone port. There were many huge Japanese cedar trees. They must be more than 500 years old.

Since there is no shrine in Korea (exept the era of Japan ruling from 1910 – 1945), Salangcho seemed interested in things of Japanese shrines.

After sightseeing Hakone Shrine, we continued walking to Hakone-en where another ropeway is facilitated to the top of Komagatake (1356m).

While walking the paved road for autmobiles, Salangcho noticed that there was a nice trail along the lake (Lake Ashi). She said it would be safer to walk on the trail. She is correct! We began walking the trail, but it was full of weeds!

We arrived at the foot of Komagatake Ropeway at 14:00. It cost 1050 yen for a roundtrip to the top of the mountain. Since it was a fine day, we could really enjoy the views from the mountain, so I thought it was worth paying that much.

We spent another hour on the top of Mt. Komagatake. The small shrine on the top of Komagatake was under construction (reparing), but it looked nice on the hill.

We took a bus from Hakone-en to Motohakone. The bus line was run not by Odakyu, so the fee, 330 yen was not included in Hakone Free Pass. We paid the fee, and changed the bus from Motohakone to Odawara. It took one hour for the ride, but it was included in the pass.

We had supper at Odawara. It was “Curry Noodle” costing 480 yen. It tasted very nostalgic to me.

Salangcho took Odakyu Line to go back to Tokyo, while I took JR to go back to Ofuna from Odawara.It was another nice sightseeing trip in Japan.

朝食は妻がクォリティ・ブレックファーストを作ってくれた。シチューもうまいし、スイカもうまい。また弁当(おにぎり)も二人分用意してくれた。

新橋7:04の東海道線下りは大船7時44分発。サランチョは一番前の車両にしっかり座っていた。小田原で彼女はスイカの清算をして1450円。小田急なら850円、このことをよく知っていてJRの高さに驚いていた。

確かにJRは高い。小田原で買った箱根フリーパスの値段は3900円。新宿ならちょうど5000円だと言う。結局(3900+1450+850=6200)と1200円高くついてしまった。次回は新宿でフリーパスを買わせ、小田急の改札口を出たところで待ち合わせるべきだろう。

さて小田原から箱根湯本、強羅、早雲山、大涌谷、桃源台、元箱根は予定通り。箱根湯本から強羅までのスイッチバックの登山鉄道の沿道はアジサイが盛りを過ぎたていたがそれでも見栄えの良いものも残っていてよかった。

強羅から早雲山へのケーブルカーはぎゅうぎゅうの満員で景色どころではなかった。ちなみに韓国語で「ケーブルカー」と言えば日本語の「ロープウェイ」を指すが、日本語の「ケーブルカー」は韓国語ではなんと言うのだろう。(ネイバーで引くと「鋼索鉄道」という訳語も出てきたが、一般的ではないような気がする。)

早雲山から大涌谷までのロープウェイはさすがに歓声が出る。高度を上げるに従って展望が開ける箱根の外輪山と相模湾。そして大涌谷にさしかかればこれまでみたことのない噴煙地の風景がみえるわけだから。

大涌谷駅ではすぐ出た左側でなにやら工事をしていた。また、大涌谷の硫黄のにおいが今回は若干強い気がした。

大涌谷では富士山に雲がかかり、雲の上から頂上がちょっこり見えるだけだったのは残念だが、まあ、夏はいつもこんなものだろう。

黒卵は5個500円というのはいつからだろうか。以前は5個300円だった気がする。しかしアツアツのゆで玉子はたしかに味がいい。

大涌谷から桃源台へのロープウェー内では、同乗した家族のペットの犬が専用の入れ物に入れられ、ハアハアと暑さのためか苦しそうだった。また、富士山の雲が少しとれて存在感を示していた。

桃源台には11:10に着いたが、次の『海賊船』の出航は12時。湖畔で軽い昼食にした。黒猫と三毛の仔猫がすり寄ってきて餌をねだったので、100円ショップのバナナ菓子を少し与えたらよく食べた。

海賊船はほぼ満員。それでもデッキの先頭部分に場所を確保。湖面の風はけっこう涼しかった。なによりも天気が良いのが感謝。元箱根には12:40に到着した。

港近くには、明治初期に起こった「廃仏毀釈」のため神社から撤去された仏像がまとめてあった。何百年も人々の信仰の対象であったものも思考方式が変えられることによって捨てられるんだなと感慨深かった。

また、この仏像群のそばに植えられていたアジサイは色鮮やかでちょうど見ごろであった。

ここから湖畔にそって箱根神社を経由して箱根園へ向かったが、往路はバスにしたため、箱根神社の湖水に浮かぶ鳥居に立ち寄らなかったのをサランチョに残念がられた。

元箱根から箱根園までの2.5kmは箱根神社もあるので歩いたのは正解。神社は観光にはないもので、珍しがられた。また、湖畔ぞいに立派な歩道が作られているが、利用者が少ないためか、草ぼうぼうで荒れ果てていた。

箱根園から駒ヶ岳頂上までのロープウェーは往復1050円でやや高いが、このように晴れた日の展望は本当に素晴らしく、支払う価値がある。

頂上では駒ヶ岳神社が工事中だったが、それでも見栄えがいい。小田原の海岸から続く湘南海岸がよくみえ、沖には大嶋が、右手には伊豆半島や駿河湾が良くみえた。

富士山の雲が少しとれて頂上が雲の上にのぞくおまけがつき、サランチョは喜んでいた。

頂上で360度の展望を堪能すると共に、きれいな野草の写真も撮った。特に目についたのはピンクの花で、ネットで調べるとシモツケソウの高山変種で「コシジシモツケソウ」と呼ぶようだ。小一時間ほど散策した後、我々は15:10の下りロープウェーで下った。

箱根園から元箱根までは小田急ではないバス会社のバスのため料金330円は別払い。

しかし元箱根から小田原まではパスが有効で約1時間乗るが、始発のため座席は確保できた。

サランチョは韓国語のガイド本をよく読んでいて、浅草の『吉幸』というレストランでは三味線を聞きながらランチがとれるということで03-5828-8833へ電話して予約を入れた。

また、小田急とJRに分かれる前にラスカの3Fでカレーうどんを食べた。480円でなつかしい味が楽しめた。

大船には18:40頃もどり、湯快爽快へ行ってから家へ戻った。好天と無事故に感謝。
