121219 Election-Day Hike to GyeRyongSan(鶏龍山계룡산816m) in Gongju(公州) and Last Stammtish Meeting in 2012

Hiking Date: Dec. 19 (Wed) 2012

Destination (mountain): GyeRyongSan(鶏龍山계룡산816m) in Gongju(公州)

Hiking course: Donghaksa Bus Stop – Seoul Restaurant – NamMaeTap – KeunGoGae – SamBulBong – GwanEumBong – EunSeon Waterfall – Donghaksa Temple – Bus Stop (About 7 km, 5.5 hours)

Partner: Eric (Su Jiulong)

It was the election day. (Park Geunhye was elected as the 1st female President of Korea.) In Korea, election days are always national holidays, so I called for irregular hike on this day to AhSoSan people. Only Eric (So Jiulong) joined me.

I told him to meet me at Yuseng Bus Stop at 8 am. He did come to Yuseong, but "Yuseong Intercity Bus Terminal". I meant “Yuseong Spar” Bus Stop. So, I had to walk to see him in the morning. (It was my fault.)

[The bus-stop of "Yuseong Spar",

We took #107 bus and arrived at Donghaksa Temple Bus Terminal at 8:40.

I suggested Eric to buy a set of climbing irons. He bought a set at a convenient store (35,000 won.)

After taking some pictures in front of Seoul Restaurant, we entered the mountain at Cheonjeongol Center Entrance.

[At Chenjeongol Entrance,

The trails were frozen, so we needed to put climbing irons, soon.

We had a coffee break (he had tea) and stopped at a spring.

We arrived at Geun Pass at 10:09. There are nice stone bench there, but too cold to take a long rest.

[]"NamMaeTap" or "Pagoda of Brother & Sister",

We arrived at NamMaeTap at 10:30. I failed to take self-timer photo there. But I explained a folk story about NamMaeTap (A tiger brought a woman to a monk. They lived as a brother and a sister, not a man and his wife. “NamMae” means a brother and a sister.)

[An old story of "Monk and Tiger and Beauty"

To access the first peak “SamBulBong” we had to climb steep iron stairs. There were beautiful hoarfrost on the trees (“SangGoDae상고대” in Korean) at and around the peak.

After taking beautiful scenes at SamBulBong, we began ridge walking toward GwanEumBong.

The ridge walk distance is only 1.6 km, but it took much time because I took many pictures.

The final access to the 2nd peak “GwanEumBong”is steep iron stars again.

[The last access to GwanEumBong,

There is a nice gazebo at GwanEumBong. We put our laggage there and climbed the top of GwanEumBong (816m)

[Eric at the top of GwanEumBong (816m),

The highest peak at GyeRongSan is ChenHwangBong (845m), but it is an off-limit area for national defence reason. It was about 12:30. We had our lunch at the gazebo. Then several beautiful birds came around us for food. Eric fed them with some bread. They liked them very much. Some of them were brave enough to stop on my arm!

At 1 pm after the lunch, we began decending the mountain. The trail from GwanEumBong to Eumseon Waterfall was just 1 km. Again the trails were steep stone stairs and all frozen. I was glad that Eric bought climbing irons in the morning.

We arrived at the waterfall at 1:42. Then the trails become gentle, but still frozen.

We arrived at Donghaksa Temple (nunnery temple) at 2:10. It is a beautiful temple, but we did not spend much time this time.

We took a bus at 2:50 and arrived at Yuseong at 3:10.

[[Stammtisch Meeting that evening]]

We met again that evening for Stammtsich meeting.

Stammtisch meeting is usually held at 8:30 pm at the international lobby in front of Coffee and Tea Leaf at W2 Building at KAIST.

One of the members, Haekyung invited other members at home that night. So we got together at 7 pm. Tracey and Jim (both Australinas) and Eric and I got together, and we all walked to Haekyung’s home near Hanpit Apartment.

[Marta from Ukraine and Eric from China,

Haekyung’s home is a big independent house of two stories (maybe 3 time larger than mine in Japan!)

She introduced her husband, and her neighbers. One of them was a Japanese who married a Korean woman.

Another important member, Marta from Ukrain, also joined our party. She usually comes with her husband, but she said her husband had a headacke that evening, so he could not join us.

It was our last meeting for this year since Jim and Marta and I are to go home for winter vacation soon.

Tracey is planning to visit Japan and I will join her to a short trip to see snow-monkeys in Nagano Prefecture on New-Year’s Eve.

Thanks to Haekyung that we had nice food and good admosphere at her home. We enjoyed the party until 9:30 pm at her home.

[A group picture at the end of the meeting, ミーティングの最後に集合写真、Stammtisch의 마지막 단체 사진]

We only missed Alan England, who used to be the most important member of Stammtsich.

But I am planning to visit him in Tennessee in Feb. next year. I look forward to seeing him very much.

[At the big map of GyeRyonSan in front of "Seoul Sikdang",

[Eric at a spring,

[Eric wearing "climbing irons" on his boots,

[Eric at "Keungogae", 『

[Eric at the guidepost of SamBulBong Pass,

[George at SamBulBong,

[Hoarfrost on the trees at SamBulBong,

[A guidepost between SamBulBong and GwanEumBong,

[The final access to GwanEumBong,

[George at the top of GwanEumBong (816m),

[A small bird flew to the gazebo,

[We began descending the mountains,

[The EunSeon Waterfall,

[Donghaksa Temple,

[At the mountain gate of Donghaksa Temple,

[Prof. S and his wife, 日本人のS教授とその夫人、일본인 S 교수님과 그의 부인]

[A group picture at the end of the meeting, ミーティングの最後に集合写真、Stammtisch의 마지막 단체 사진]
