Destination (mountain): Mt. SeoRakSan雪嶽山 (GwiddegiCheongbongクィテキチョンボン 1577m)
Hiking course: Hangeryong – GwiddegiCheongbong(1577m) – Daeseungryong – Jangsudae (12.6 km, 9.5 hours)
Partner: 14 AhToSan members
We left Daejeon at 5 am, 2 hours earlier than usual, because the destination was far and the hiking time was long.
There were only 15 members applied for this hike. It was the smallest number of participants as long as I know. So, AhToSan hired a micro-bus again as the third straight week. However, it was a micro-bus with 25 seats. So it was a bit better than previous 2 times.
We celebrated the president’s 300th hike, and Yoro’s 100th hike this time. I felt sorry that the participants were so few.
However, we had a very attractive new member, “Mogwa(모과)” which means “quince” in English. She is charming and very friendly.
Though it was her first hike at AhToSan, she seemed an experienced hiker with good hiking gears.
We arrived at Hangeryong before 9:30. After having a group picture at the parking lot, we climbed the stairs and had a short meeting at the gazebo named “Seorakru.”
J, the hiking planner, explained the brief overview of the hike and we had stretch exercise, and began hiking.
I soon became the last hiker, but not too bad. We had “Suzuki Time” after one hour walk. We all had two boxes of grapes, and some makgeolli all together.
There were a lot of royal azaleas along the trail, and I could see some “Tol-jindallae” and the latter was over the peak season.
We arrived at the junction of the three trails (Hangeryong, Daechoengbong and Kwitekicehongbong) at 11:30, where we could have nice views of Seoraksan mountains.
Then we turned left and began climbing “Neodeol Area”where there were many rocks. It was extremely difficult to climb or even to walk on it.
Last time when I climbed this mountain, the “Jindallae” or “Korean rhododendron” were in full broom. But this time, the peak of this flower seemed over then.
It was a bit cloudy, therefore, it was cool, not too hard. I was with Yoro, Mogwa, and Billy who put “Vaseline” on my legs when I had acute pain.
They planned to arrive at the peak of GwiddegiCheongbong at noon, but we arrived at 12:47. We joined the first group and had lunch together.
Mogwa sat by me, so I ate some of her side dishes. One of them “Maesiljangajji매실장아찌” the Korean version of “Umeboshi梅干し.” But they are completely different foods. I told her about “Umeboshi” and showed it which was inside of my rice-ball. She ate a little bit, then commented, “it’s too salty.”
When we had makgeolli during “Suzuki Time” she did not drink the traditional Korean wine. But she said she liked Japanese beer. So I shared Asahi Dry with her. She said Kirin better, so I may bring “Kirin-Ichiban” next time.
I had “charley horses” in my legs while climbing the “Nodeol Area.” I was afraid of being too late, so soon after having lunch, while others were still at the top of the mountain, I began walking alone. It was a big mistake.
I noticed a part of rainbow (upside down) when I was walking alone. It must be a part of “circumhorizon arc.” But all AhToSan hikers enjoyed the full circumshorizon arc and even the round rainbows and the circle around the sun.
When I checked the Net about such rainbows, I found out that the holizontal rainbow as “circumhorizon arc: CHA” and the one above was “circumzenithal arc: CZA” and the circle around the sun was “Corona.”
These phenomena were very rare, and we could see them all at once. That is we were really lucky.
I thank God for showing us His wonderful arts like this. It must be once for all life experience for all of us.
Anyhow, I went down the rocky slope alone, and most of AhToSan members caught up with me, and passed by me.
Yet, I walked with some of these fast hikers. Among them, “Dotori도토리” or “Acorn” and “Saneso산에서” were good photographers. They took nice pictures.
Dotori was also a good botanist who knows many plants’ names. He told me the names of most of the flowers I asked him. I was very happy to know the names of many flowers.
As I came close to “Daeseungryong대승령” I became alone. Some went ahead, and some were behind me. Actually I was in the middle. There were 7 members ahead of me, and there were 6 members behind me.
I arrived at Daeseungryong at 18:40. Then at the destination, “Jangsudae장수대” at 19:10.
I called the leader of this hike, J, about the place to have the wrap-up party. It was the nice restaurant across the street.
There was a nice traditional Korean style house near the restaurant. It must be nice to see it closely, but I had no time.
I joined the 7 hikers who arrived at the restaurant first. Then those who came after me, also joined us.
When all of hikers got together, we had the party formally. We cerebrated Alain Delon’s 300th hike and Yoro’s 100th hike together. They prepared two big cakes and we ate them as the desserts.
[We cerebrated Alain Delon's 300th and Yoro's 100th hike, アランドロン会長の300回、ヨロの100回目記念ケーキ、알랭 들롱 회장의 300 번째, 요로 님의 100 번째 기념 케이크들 ]
It was my 25th hike for this year, and 316th hike as the total participation of AhToSan regular hike.
