Skill Maintenance and Development

When providing disability support services, you will need to engage your clients in practices that support their skills and help them to develop new skills. It is important, however, to explore the relevance of the skill set to the individual based on several fundamental considerations and by asking some key questions:

・ Does this skill support the achievement of the individual’s expressed goals or needs?

・ Has the person participated in decisions about skills that will be learned?

・ Is this skill based on the individual’s preferences and strengths?

・ Will they have the opportunity to practise it and is it realistic that the individual will be able to achieve this skill?

・ Is this skill age appropriate for the person and will the development of this skill enhance the individual’s status in the wider community?

・ Is the skill transferrable? In other words, can the skill be used in other contexts other than the one practiced in?

・　When the skill is taught, does the teaching of it follow person-centred practice and principles of empowerment?

Equipment

There are a number of aids, equipment and assistive technology that can support people with disabilities to maintain their independence and self-determination. Having some knowledge of these will help you to assemble appropriate equipment as and when required according to an individual plan.

Some major types of aids, equipment and assistive technology include:

・ aids for daily living

・ alternative and augmentative communication

・ mobility aids

・ seating and positioning equipment

・ computer access aids

・ environmental controls

・ computer access aids

・ environmental controls

・ home modifications, vehicle modifications and workplace modifications

・ prosthetics and orthodontics

Daily Living and Mobility Aids

Help people to perform tasks they may find difficult, by increasing ease and safety and promoting independence.
