The 2nd day of the trip to Shikoku & Kyushu

Leg:Shimonoseki⇒Tokuyama⇒Hiroshima⇒Okayama⇒Takamatsu⇒Tsurugisan

Got up at 5:30 a.m. on the ferry. There were only 6 passengers in the room 112. Took a both at 6 a.m. Had breakfast at the lobby. Disembarked at Shimonoseki Port at 8 a.m.

We met Mr. Matsumoto at JR Shimonoseki station. Took a local train to Tokuyama. At the “green counter” at the station, Mr. Matsumoto tried to buy discount tickets by reserving “rent-a-car” at Takamatsu, but failed due to the availability of automobiles. We could not reserve any car, we had to buy tickets without any discount and more over, we missed the scheduled shinkansen train!

Anyhow, we took the next available train, which was “Kodama” from Tokuyama to Hiroshima. Changed to “Nozomi” the fastest shinkansen, to Okayama and got off there to see “Okayama Castle.”

I visited Okayama once in 1965 when I was 18 years old. It was a part of high school excursion. We visited the famous “Korakuen” garden then, but not the castle. It was under the reconstruction and it was completed just next year(1966).

We took “Marin Liner” from Okayama to Takamatsu. It was my first experience to go across “Seto Inland Sea” by railway. 44 years ago, we took “Uko Renrakusen” a kind of railway-ferry between Honshu and Shikoku.

At Takamastu, we rented a Toyota car, and headed for Mt. Tsuruki. Mr. Matsumoto began driving at 3:30 p.m. and we arrived at the inn named “LAFORET TSURUGISAN” at 6:40 p.m. The road to Mt. Tsurugi was extremely narrow and full of hairpin curves so it took more time than Mr. Matsumoto estimated.

It was “tatami” room, and clean and cosy. We changed clothes to “yukata” after taking a bath, then had a gorgous dinner with “shabushabu”. A stay with 2 meals plus a bottle of beer costed 8000 yen. We thought it was quite reasonable price.

四国・九州旅行第2日目 9月18日(土)快晴

行程:下関⇒徳山⇒広島⇒岡山⇒高松→剣山

朝5時半ごろ目が覚めた。112号室は6人ほどで、空きが目立つ。6時に朝ぶろに入った。朝飯は前日買ったおにぎりなどを食べた。予定通り8時下船。

スムーズに通関を済ませ、下関駅で松本さんと合流。下関から徳山へ鈍行。徳山でJRの駅レンタカーを手配しようとしたが、らちが明かず、予定した新幹線に乗り遅れ、割引もきかず散々な目に遭う。

新幹線を一本送らせてまず「こだま」。広島で「のぞみ」に乗り換えて岡山で下車。岡山城をタクシーで往復して見物。

その後、マリンライナーで高松へ。岡山は高校の修学旅行で来たことがある。たしか後楽園を見学したと思うがその時は岡山城は再建前だったようで、まったく記憶にない。公園の堀に青もが発生しているようで、魚が浮いて腐臭がするのは興ざめだ。

瀬戸大橋を渡るのも初めてで、昔は宇高連絡船に乗って高松から岡山へ渡った。今回は逆で岡山から高松へ渡った。

さて、高松でトヨタのレンタカーを借りた。この料金12000円はベルナルドがカードで支払い、松本さんと私がそれぞれ4000円を現金でベルナルドに支払った。

高松から剣山へ向かったが剣山への道はヘアピンカーブと隘路が続き、時間が予想以上にかかった。

宿所の「ラ・フォーレつるぎ」に着いたのは6時35分で、まず風呂に入り、食事は7時15分から一番最後になった。

ここの食事はトリ肉のだしをとった汁での豚肉のしゃぶしゃぶで大変豪華であり、ボリュームもたっぷりだった。ビールは3人で3本。この500円の追加を加えて8000円は大変「お得」だと思った。
