Sydney Report #1 Sydney City Tour

Last year, I came to Chatswood, Sydney alone and stayed with my first son’s family for 3 months (Oct., Nov, Dec.) to test the water. This year, I came with my wife, and we are going to live for 4 months.

Soon after we came to Chatswood, the 1st week of September in 2017, one of my nephew’s daughter, M (20) came to our son’s home for home-staying.

Since our first son and his wife have 4 kids, we are a big family of 8, and having a visitor made us 9 by all. But we all enjoyed having this visitor and showed her the best of Sydney.

Our son took a day off and we went to see our guest at the airport. After putting her luggage at the house in Chatswood, we (my son, the guest, my wife and myself) went to the City and began Sydney City Tour utilizing a sightseeing bus ride.

My son bought tickets by internet and he took us two places before taking the sightseeing bus.

First, he took us to “Mrs. Macquaries Point” where we can see the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge at the same time. It is the view point at the eastern end of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Later I found out that there is a sand-rock chair called "Mrs. Macquarie's Chair." Here I quote from Wikipedia as below.

“Mrs Macquarie's Chair is an exposed sandstone rock cut into the shape of a bench, on a peninsula in Sydney Harbour, hand carved by convicts from sandstone in 1810 for Governor Macquarie's wife Elizabeth. The peninsula itself is named Mrs Macquarie's Point, and is part of the Domain, near the Royal Botanic Gardens.”

My nephew’s daughter, M, seemed to have pre-visit research about Sydney sightseeing spots. She asked our son to take her to the places in her wish-to-visit list. So he took us to St Mary's Cathedral near Mrs. Macquarie’s Point.

St Mary's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney, currently Anthony Fisher OP. It is dedicated to the "Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians", Patroness of Australia and holds the title and dignity of a minor basilica, bestowed upon it by Pope Pius XI on 4 August 1932.

St Mary's has the greatest length of any church in Australia (although it is neither the tallest nor largest overall). is located on College Street in the heart of the City of Sydney where, despite the high-rise development of the Sydney central business district, its imposing structure and twin spires make it a landmark from every direction. In 2008, St Mary's Cathedral became the focus of World Youth Day 2008 and was visited by Pope Benedict XVI who consecrated the new forward altar. [Quoted from Wikipedia]

Photo-taking is prohibited so I cannot show you the pictures of inside. But anyone can entered the inside. We sat at the seats and felt the religious atmosphere.

Then we took the double-decker sightseeing bus. The audio-guide available with 8 different languages including Japanese.

It was my first experience to take the sightseeing bus in Sydney, so I enjoyed the view from the up-floor of the bus.

We got off near Opera House. My son took M to a gift shop at Opera House, then we enjoyed tasty pizza with wine at Opera House Bar beside of Opera House.

My son also took M to several places of her visit list, then we got off the bus at Darling Harbour.

While my son was guiding my nephew’s daughter to the shop of her choice, my wife and I took chairs at Self-Service Frozen Yogurt Shop.

We bought cups of frozen yogurt. The PR picture of delicious-look frozen yogurt and price $3.4 caught my attention. I misunderstood the message. I took a cup and put frozen yogurt and much topping on it by myself Then casher weighted the cup and it was more than 300 g, therefore I ate more than $10 frozen yogurt!

I finished the city tour of Sydney with the delicious but a bit expensive frozen yogurt.

BTW, there are many interesting facilities such as Sydney Aquarium, Chinese Gardens, Australian National Maritime Museum, etc. It is worth taking time to visit such facilities.

シドニーレポート第1号　「シドニーのシティツアー」

私は昨年９月末から３か月間、シドニーノースエリアの中心地、チャッツウッドの息子一家の家に同居した。今年は8月末から４か月間、妻と共に同居を開始した。

我々がこちらへ来てすぐ、二十歳になる甥の娘Mが一週間、息子の家にホームステイに来た。息子夫婦には４人の子供がいるので、この間の同居人数は９人である。

初日は息子が休みを取って空港へ出迎え、チャッツウッドの家へ案内してから、シドニーのシティ・ツアーに参加した。

シティ・ツアーは乗り降り自由の屋上タイプでオーディオ・ガイド付きのもの。乗り場はセント・メアリー大聖堂の近くバスストップだが、その前に息子はシドニーのオペラハウスやハーバーブリッジを一望にできる名所「ミセス・マッコリーズ・ポイント」に案内してくれた。

ここは、ロイヤル植物園の東端にあるビューポイントでオペラハウスとハーバーブリッジが同時に眺められる。

ニューサウスウェールズ州の初代総督ラクラン・マックォーリーの妻エリザベス・マックォーリーが、ここから街のスカイラインやイギリスからの船が入ってくることを眺めていたことから、1810年に命名されたという。

この場所には、総督の妻エリザベスのために、受刑者たちにより砂岩で作らせたベンチがあり、ミセス・マッコーリーズ・チェア（Mrs. Macquarie's Chair）としても親しまれているということだが、うかつなことに、この岩の椅子には気がつかなかった。

甥の娘Mは事前にシドニーの観光スポットを調べていたらしく、行ってみたいところがかなりはっきりしていて、そのうちの１つが、セント・メアリー大聖堂である。

セント・メアリー大聖堂 は、ローマ・カトリックのゴシック・リヴァイヴァル建築による大聖堂で、歴代のシドニー大主教はここで教会の職務を遂行している。ニューサウスウェールズ州知事マッコーリーが1821年に建設計画を立て、イギリス人建築家ピュージンに依頼して建築されたが、1864年に初代の大聖堂は火事で消失した。その後、大聖堂を再建しようという機運が高まり、ピュージンの弟子のウォーデルにデザインを依頼し、再建が始まり、1930年にローマ教皇ピウス9世によって、教会堂より上位のバシリカであると認定された。2008年6月に教皇ベネディクト16世が公式訪問した。[ウィキペディアより引用]

ここは内部の写真撮影は禁止であるが、出入りが自由で、厳粛な雰囲気の中で思索をするのもよい。また聖堂内の両壁には聖書のなかの重要なシーンを描いた絵がかかっていてそれを自由に見ることができる。

この二か所を見学してからいよいよシティ・ツアーのバスに乗車した。音声ガイドは座席の横に設置されていて、日本語を含め８カ国対応となっている。

シドニーの街の案内がこのガイドで聴けるのは新鮮でよかった。また、座席も屋上で当然見晴しもよく、街路樹の新芽が春であることを感じさせる。

最初の下車後の目的地はMのリクエスト通り、オペラハウス。ここは何度も来ているので私には新鮮味はないが、Mにはもちろん必須訪問施設だ。息子はオペラハウス内のお土産屋に案内し、外のテラスで待っていた妻に合流した。

テラスのオペラハウス・バーで、ピザとワインの軽食を楽しみ、再び観光バスに乗って市内観光を続けた。

Mがあらかじめぜひ行きたいといった数か所を息子が案内し、最後にダーリングハーバーのショッピングモール近くで下車した。

私と妻はモール内を歩くことはせず、入口付近にあったフローズンヨーグルトの店でセルフサービスのフローズンヨーグルトを食べて息子とMが戻ってくるのを待った。

ちなみにセルフサービスというのは曲者で、おいしそうなトッピングを自分でよそい、その重さをはかって支払うシステム。

私は看板にあった3.4ドルの100g当たりという部分を見過ごし1個当たりの値段と早とちりして、よそったため、300グラムを超え10数ドルの超豪華なフローズンヨーグルトを食べることになった。

私はダーリングハーバーから鉄道でチャッツウッドへ帰ったが、この付近には水族館や中国庭園など観光施設が集中していて、ゆっくりとめぐる価値がありそうだ。
