120404 Stammtisch meeting (Marta's Birthday)

What happened: Birthday Party for Marta at Stammtisch

Participants: Marta & Bongjun, Jim and Tracey, two Koreans and myself

According to Wikipedia, A Stammtisch (German: "regular table") is a scheduled informal meeting group at a specially reserved table in a beer hall or other establishment in German-speaking Europe, which can be held on a weekly or monthly basis. The table usually has a polished sheen from frequent use, and is frequently marked off with a sign, banner, or ashtray.

When I came to Korea in May, 2003, I saw Alan England and he introduced me this informal English speaking meeting held every Wednesday evening.

Since then, until last December, Alan and I had been the most faithful regular members of the meeting.

Nowa Alan went back to his home country (USA), I was afraid of the existence of the meeting.

Now I found another faithful member among old members here; Jim Ketan from Australia. He and I have been the most frequent participants of Stammtisch this year.

On April 4 this year, Marta of Ukrine and her husband, Bongjun came to the meeting to celebrate Marta’s birthday.

Tracey, another Australian, and two Korean boys also joined the meeting, and we sang “Happy Birthday to Martha” and had piece of cake together.

The topic of the night was “Do you really want to have ‘eternal life’?” proposed by Jim.

I introduced an episode in a series of “manga” written by Osamu Tezuka: “Phenix.” In the story, God gave a sinner “eternal life” as a punishment.

I wonder I really wish to live forever even with God.

Marta is still 20s and she is a mother of 1.5 year old girl.

スタムティッシュは私がアランに初めて会った2003年5月からずっと参加している毎週水曜日の夜の英会話サロンだ。

アランによると設立者がドイツ人で、「スタムティッシュ」とはドイツ語で「いつものテーブル」という意味。すなわちビアホールなどに定期的に集まる人々のサロンといったような意味合いだ。

私が初めて参加した2003年にはドイツ人のレギュラー参加者がいたかもしれない。しかしこの10年間でもっとも出席率の高かったのはアラン・イングランドと私だろうと思う。

アランが昨年12月に米国のテネシー州へ帰ってしまい、存続が危ぶまれたが、今年になってからはオーストラリア人のジムと私がレギュラー・メンバーである。

この日はウクライナ人のマルタの誕生日を祝うため、ご主人のボンジュンがケーキを携えてやって来た。

他の参加者はジム同様、オーストラリア国籍のトレイシーと韓国人の若者2人と私だった。

この日の話題はやや哲学的・宗教的な話で、「あなたは永遠の命を希望するか」というテーマだった。

私はジムに日本の漫画家「手塚治虫」の作品の１つで「火の鳥」というシリーズものがあり、その中で神が課したある罪人に対する罰が「不死の命」だという話をした。

「永遠の命」に対して考えを深めるきっかけとなる話題だった。

ちなみにマルタは20代で１児の母でもある。
