120407, Namsan (南山남산), in Gyonju(慶州경주), Gyonbuk Province

Hiking Date: April 7 (Sat) Clear and strong wind

Destination (mountain): Namsan, Gyonju, Gyonbuk Province

Hiking course: Yongjari – Cheonusa – Mt. Gowisan - Beacon mound – Chilbulam – Geumosan – Sansa Rock - Three Royal Tombs Parking Lot

Partner: 44 AhToSan members including Jeongbin

I got up at four to prepare for the hike. Went to the bus stop at South Gate. It was rather cold and I regret that I did not wore warm gloves that day.

Jeongbin came on time (6:50 a.m.) It was full again and no vacant seat on the bus. I taught him Japanese on the bus.

When we stopped at a service area, a thief came to the vacant bus and stole the whole bag of our vice-president, Chilgapsan. Chilgapsan said that there was his wallet in the bag.

They reported it to the police, and checked CCTV. There was a man carring the stolen bag in the video, but the face of the burglar was not clear.

We left the service area 30 minutes delayed. Anyway, the bag was not found any place.

We arrived at the entrance of the trail at the parking lot of Yongjangri at 10:20.

At the beginning of the hike, we had to climb the steep rocky slope. At several places, we had to hold the ropes and climbed the vertical rocks. When we came up to the ridge, there were no AhToSan members except Jeongbin.

We felt uneasy, remembering of the last time (we took the wrong route.) But at the first peak, Mt. Gowisan, we saw two members, and we checked the map. We made sure about the direction by seeing the guide post, and went on with confidence.

We came to the group of AhToSan having lunch in the woods. So Jeongbin and I joined them. Then many members came and joined us. We realized that we were not the last.

Jeongbin brought unique rice balls which he made by himself. It was rice balles wrapped by washed kimchi (leaves of Chinese cabbage.). They tasted good.

Following the first group, Jeongbin and I started early for the afternoon hike. We came to the next point “Chilbulam”or “Seven Buddha Statues Temple”at 13:30. But Chilbulam was located a bit far from the trail So we skipped to visit the temple.

Later when I saw the pictures of Chilbulam, it was quite a unique place where some nuns served visitors green tea. What a shame that we did not visit the temple!

[This beautiful nun seems to come from Western countries,

We walked easy trails along the ridge to the main peak, Geumosan, seeing beautiful flowrs of Jindallae and cherry blossoms. We arrived at the top of Geumosan at 14:15. There we saw many AhToSan members and took several pictures with the big stone mark on which Chinese characters were curved.

[At the top of Geumosan,

The meaning of “Geumo” is “Golden Turtle.” It is said that they found a big rock wich looked like turtle carapace. The mountain is not so high, it is only 323m. So it is possible to see the whole mountain as a big carapace.

After Geumosan, we just went down to the three royal tumbs. On the way down, we saw several heritage of Buddhism, including the big statue curved on the cliff.

I clearly remember that when Teajonhikers visited Namsan in the winder of 2004, Alan and I, with some other foreigners saw the same statue very closely. The statue was curved about 1000 years ago.

The three royal tumes are older than the statue. These are the tumbs of Shilla Kingdom.

We came to the parking lot where our chartered bus had been parked at 15:45. Some fast hikers were already there having wrap-up party by themselves. We joined them, soon.

[Main menu; pork hocks or pig's trotters,

The last hikers joined us more than 30 minutes late. So we had a long party until 17:00.

Then we moved to the park where Cheomseongdae was. Cheomseongdae is said to be used as an astronomical observatory during 7th century.

We had about 30 minutes free time to walk around the park. There were plenty of cherry trees and rape blossoms but the time was a bit too early to enjoy these flowers.

We left the park at 18:00 and came back to Daejeon at 20:30.

It was my 19th hike for this year and the 275th AhToSan regular hike for me.

[Lunch time in the woods,

[The stone monument on which "Geumosan" is written,

[At the wrap-up party,

[In front of Cheomseongdae,
