My long time Korean friend, Mr. Min, invited me to his Japanese Study Group several times.

When I finished my classes at Daedeok University in December, 2013, I finally accepted his invitation and joined his group in Dunsan.

On Dec. 16, I saw Mr. Min in front of City Hall North Exit at 6:30 pm.

DJS is being held on every Monday on the 5th floor of Wingsky Building, 5 minute walk from City Hall North Exit.

There were 6 Korean members and a Japanese instructor, Mr. K.

They began to use a Japanese novel, “Kichen” written by Yoshimoto Banana.

They read this novel, each page, by one member. When he/she reads a sentence in Japanese, he/she interprets its meaning in Korean.

Mr. K helps them reading correctly, and if the interpretation was wrong, he also correct it.

The students may ask questions about the sentences, or background of the novel.

So, the level of Jananese understanding is quite high, comparing the university students'.

I like their attitude, and I began attending the meeting, every time except during I was back in Japan from the end of December to the end of January.

They also have a party, once a moth, usually the first Monday of every month.

I joined the parties in February and March. They speak Japanese during the parties as well.

When I attended their party for the first time, another Japanese joined the party. She has been in Korea since her marriage in 1995.

She has two sons, a high school boy and a junior high school boy.

Her Korean standard is much higher than mine, and she began attending the class after the party.

So, I believe DJS members are lucky, having such wonderful volunteer teachers such as Mr. K and Ms. H.

Mr. Min, is the president of this club. He is a detective at Dunsan Police Department. But he has been busy for his own work.

It was the last Monday (3/10) he joined for the first time since he introduced me to the club on Dec. 16.

Ms. Y, The Sunflower Princess is in charge of general affairs. She has beautiful black long hair, and a beauty. She always prepares some snack, such as hamburgers or kimpap for the rest of members.

She also is an MC for the parties. Some Korean members attend only the parties. (So far, there are 5 such members.)

Sesil is one of the best students in terms of understanding Japanese cluture and history. She is a big fan of Japanese manga such as Slam Dunk.

Ms. Kim, a professional folk song singer joined AhToSan, together with Mr. Lee, a president of the Plice Orchestra in Daejeon.

They accompanied with me on March 1, Mt. Palgongsan. Ms. Kim kept attending since then, and she accompanied with me for Mt. BaekHakSan on March 8, and will join me on March 15, my last AhToSan hike to Yonhwado Island.

During the class, we rarely have private conversation. The chances are bigger during the party, but if we go hiking together, we have plenty of time.

Ms. Kim did esp. last time. We sat together on the bus, and walked together for 7 hours, speaking mostly in Japanese.

It’s shame that I have only one meeting left until I leave Daejeon.

But we meet only to part, as they say.

5年以上前に知り合った屯山警察署の刑事さんである閔さんから折に触れ誘われていた屯山日本語スタディグループに、大徳大学での授業が終わったことから、参加することにした。

初日は昨年12月16日月曜日で、午後6時半に大田市庁の北口玄関前で閔さんと待ち合わせ、そこから徒歩5分ほどのウィングスカイ・ビルの5階へ向かった。

この日の参加者は男性3名、女性3名、日本人講師のKさん7名で、テキストは吉本バナナの「キッチン」。

受講生6人が１文章ごとに音読し、韓国語でその意味を解説して、各人1ページずつ順番にすすむ。誤読があれば木村講師が指摘。意味が分からないところがある場合も同様。ひとまわりしたところで全体を通して質疑応答。約1時間半ほどの勉強会である。

DJSの開催日は毎週月曜日で、時間は午後7時から午後9時ごろまで。毎月第1月曜日は場所を変えて懇親会である。

大学の受講生と違い、自発的に学ぶ人々で、その水準も非常に高く、文学作品をじっくり味わうグループである。

私はたいへん気に入り、以来、日本へ一時帰国した期間を除き、すべての月曜日、出席し、懇親会も2月と3月の2回参加した。

1月末まで講師として出席していたKさんは、2月の第2週からは、私が出席している間、休むことになり、それ以来、おそらく最後の日となる来週まで休むようだ。

代わりに2月の懇親会で初めてDJSにきた女性のHさんが私と共に出席している。

彼女は韓流ブームの始まるはるか前の1990年代に現在の御主人と日本で知り合い、結婚され、高校生と中学生の男子二人がいる主婦である。

韓国語に非常に堪能で、日本の小説の解説も韓国語で非常にこまかいニュアンスまで説明できる。このスタディグループは非常に幸運だと言えよう。

DJSの会長は私をこの集いに紹介した閔さんだが、最近仕事が忙しいということで、12/16以来、欠席続き。今週、久しぶりに出席した。

DJSの総務は長い黒髪がたいへん印象的な美人の「ひまわり姫」。彼女は毎回、出席者のためにハンバーガーやキムパプの軽食を用意してくれる。また、月に1度の懇親会の世話もする。

日本文化及び歴史に造詣が深く、日本語もとても流暢なのはセシルさんで、なんと日本の漫画(スラムダンク？)のファンだという。

また、私にとってうれしかったのは、趣味がアウトドアスポーツだというキムさんと李さんがアトサンの登山に参加してくれたことだ。

特にプロの民謡歌手、キムさんは3月1日の八公山を皮ぎりに3月8日の百鶴山にも同行してくれて、さらに明日の3月15日の蓮花島にも申し込んだ。勉強会だけでは個人的な会話はほとんどできないが、懇親会ではかなりその機会が増え、また、登山も同行するとなるとその新密度は一気に増加する。

懇親会だけでお会いした5人も、一期一会の出会いであり、今後、どのような関係ができるか、期待できるものがある。

2度目の懇親会は3月3日の桃の節句の日で、一次会は勉強会が開催されるビルの1回の焼肉料理店。私は3月20日からの禁食修道会に備えて減食しなければいけないのだが、すっかり気分が盛り上がり、「ひまわり姫」の提案に乗り、２次会までつきあってしまった。
