140311 Farewell Party at Shinseongdong with Dr. Joung, Dr. Kim, Dr. An and Dr. Yu

Partner: Dr. Joung, Dr. Kim, Dr. An and Dr. Yu (Researchers at ETRI)

I came to Korea to work at ETRI in May 2003. I worked at ETRI as an invited researcher. The key person who invited me to ETRI was Dr. Joung, then the team director.

Dr. Joung came to my former company, InfoCom, as a trainee dispached by ETRI in 1995.

At that time, I was the only researcher who speaks Korean language at InfoCom. Therefore, I was in charge of taking care of him.

We became good friends, and I took him to my wife’s hometown in Tsuruoka, and we went traveling such as Kamikochi and Mt. Norikura.

Then I was dispatched to ETRI by InfoCom next year. Now it was his turn to take care of me. He took me to his parents’ home in Gunsan, and several other places as well.

Therefore, when I lost my job in Japan in 2003, he invited me to work at ETRI.

I was in charge of market research in Japan and USA at ETRI.

So, I owe Dr. Joung a lot, esp. for being able to live in Korea for 10 years and 10 months.

I left ETRI in April 2006 while he was in USA for Sabbatical Year. Then I found another job at Daejeok University and worked from 2007 to the end of 2013.

Anyhow, Dr. Joung is one of the key persons who made me able to live in Korea for 10 years and 10 months.

I wanted to say “good-bye” personally, but he invited me to have “Farewell BBQ” in Shinseongdong.

When we entered the restaurant, we found three ETRI personnel already sitting at a table.

Dr. Joung knew them all, and I knew two of them. Only Dr. Kim was new to me, because he recently came from USA.

We joined the three, and enjoyed the “Samgyoksal” BBQ together.

Dr. Kim took the bill and paid all by himself. This is a typical Korean style to settle the bill. (One person paid all cost.)

When they visit Japan, I should follow suit, but I hope that they do not come all together at once.

私が2003年5月に来韓し、2006年3月まで、2年10ヶ月、韓国電子通信研究員に招聘研究員として働くことができたのはひとえに鄭博士のおかげである。

鄭博士は1995年に私が元勤めていた情総研にETRIから短期研修生として派遣され、日本語の学習と日本市場のベンチマーキング及び人脈構築活動に当たった。

私は韓国語が少しできたので、韓国から私の元の職場を訪問または研修に来日した人の面倒を見る立場だった。

そのような事から以来親しい友人となり、在日中は山形県鶴岡市の妻の実家へいっしょに行ったり、上高地や乗鞍岳に行ったりした。

また、逆に私がETRIへ短期研修性として派遣された時、鄭博士の郡山の実家へ招待されたり、あちこち連れて行ってもらったりした。

そのようなわけで、日本で働き場がなくなったとき、鄭博士は私をETRIへ招聘研究員として招いてくれた。

彼は当時、チーム長であったが、それだけの影響力がある人であった。

ETRIでは主に日本の情報通信市場のネットを活用した市場調査を担当したが、ETRIの研究員としての待遇を受けた。

私が韓国で10年10ケ月、生活するようなった直接の切っ掛けを作ってくれた人で、いくら感謝しても感謝しきれない人である。

鄭博士は現在、ETRIの創造経済研究部門の部長に昇進している。毎日大変忙しいスケジュールであるが、私の帰国に際して時間を割いてくれた。

送別会は私の住む新城洞の焼肉店でサムギョクサルを食べながらということになった。

この焼肉店は、昨年12月に最後の期末試験が終わった後、学生たち10名を連れて焼肉パーティを行ったおなじ店である。

ところが、店に入ると偶然ETRI職員が3人、すでに席をかまえて会食するところであった。

先客3人のうち、一人は米国がえりの金博士で、後の二人は顔見知りであった。

鄭博士にはこちらでお世話になったので私が御招待すべき立場だが、なんとなくこの3人に合流し、会食を楽しんだが、会計は先客3人のうちの一人が行った。

彼らがに将来、東京へ出張して会うことがあれば、次は私が御招待する番である。
