110509 Qingdao Sightseeing (May Fourth Square, Qingdao Beer Factory

Sightseeing, Qingdao, China

Date: May 9, 2011 (Mon) Fine

Itinerary: Hotel Checkout – May Fourth Square – Qingdao Beer Factory – Lunch at a restaurant – Free time at Beer Town – Qingdao Port → Inchon Port

Partners: 30 AhToSan members and Mr. Matsumoto.

We had the last breakfast at the hotel at 7 a.m. Mr. Matusmoto and I went early and enjoyed our breakfast with plenty of time.

We planned to start sightseeing at 9 a.m., but it seemed that we had some problems (such as stained the bed with ramen soup, etc.) They would not return our passports until we fully paid the compensation.

On the other hand, AhToSan people held a surprise birthday party for “Smile” whose birthday happened to be on May 9th.

We left the hotel 15 minuts after 9 a.m. and headed for May Fourth Square. It is a beach side square, and the international yacht race was held here during 2008 Beijing Olympic Game.

The square name “May Fourth”was named after “May Fourth Movement”1919 when Chinese university students protested against imperialism, especially Japanese one.

The most famous sculpture is called “May Wind”and the square is surrounded by many skyscrapers now.

Mr. Matsumoto and I walked leisurely along the seashore, and there were a lot of small shops selling suveniors that reminded me of a resort area of my hometown, “Enoshima.”

We left May Fourth Square at 10:15 and headed for Qingdao Beer Factory.

Qingdao (or Tsingtao) Brewery was founded in 1903 by German settlers and its products, Qingdao beer now accounts for more than 50% of China’s beer exports.

All sightseers could taste a glass of Qingdao Beer, and a small bag of peanuts and that’s all what they can have free of charge.

At the end of the sightseeng course, there was a gift shop and a big hall where we could buy pitchers of beer as much as we pay. Our guide of the day, Ms. Koh bought us a dozen of pitchers full of draft beer. We all enjoyed drinking Qingdao Beer.

Then we moved to the last Chinese restaurant where we enjoyed the last Chinese food with Qingdao Beer again.

After having the last Chinese lunch, we strolled around “Beer Town.” There were some unique sculptures made of beer bottles. It was quite fun to walk around with AhToSan people.

I found a big tree of Paulownia tomentosa, or "the Empress Tree" or "kiri" in Japanese in the town. The flowers of this tree were in full bloom, and they were just beautiful.

We went to Qingdao Port at 2 p.m. and boarded on the ferry boat at 4 p.m.

This time, our accommodation were all in double-deck beds. Mr. Matsumoto took the top of the bunk bed, while I took the bottom of the bunk bed.

We had a great fun even in the double-deck bed section, with a lot of canned beer and even with Chinese wine (very strong, 45% or 50% of alcohole.)

The double-deck bed was comfortable for sleeping, but it was too hot, because of no ventilation (and AhToSan members’ heated conversation.)

It seems that they chatted until 2 a.m. in the midnight.

[Tasting Qingdao Beer Corner,

[The guide, Ms. Koh bought us a dozen of Qingdao Beer pitchers,

[At the cabin of double-deck beds, we had a party with canned Qingdao Beer,
