Partners: Alone to Vancouver, then Mr. & Mrs. Walter and their son, Paul. Paul’s wife Debbie joined us.
It’s been cloudy or little rain since I arrived at Seattle. It was my last day to see Chris. So, when he went to work at 6:30 am, I saw him off at the exit.
While waiting for Lois and Craig’s arrival, I wrote 5 postcards (to Kikko, Kaoruko, Teruko, my sister, and Bernerdo and Eric.) I used the postcards of Niagara Falls.
Craig and Lois came to the door at the Juergens at just 10 am. Haejong woke up and see me off. She made sandwiches for me last night. So I got sandwich and an apple from her.
Craig and Lois took me to their home, first. I paid 78 dollars for Amtrak fee. They sent me to the station and accompanied to the "seat assignments.")

I got on the board and tried to sit at #6 train, seat #12, but there was already a passenger on my seat! I hurried back to the seat allocation desk, then the conductor said, “Just sit at Dining Car” without any apology. It’s a double booking! I thought he should say, at least, “I’m sorry.” But he behaved calmly and just a matter of fact.

Actually, Dining car is not bad at all. It has a wide window and I can get beverage and food.
Later, the conductor came and gave me another allocation. It was an aisle seat, but my neighbor was a friendly black-haired girl.
I enjoyed seeing the nice views from the window, esp. on my right-side. I could see a lot of water, it could be an ocean, or lakes.

When the Amtrak came close to Vancouver, I saw a beautiful snow-covered mountain. It looked like Mt. Yarigatake, sharp pointed summit.
It took more than 3 hours and it arrived at 4 pm, 30 minutes delay.
When I got off the train, there was no plat-form at all. It was just the ground, unlike Japan.

A beard-man approached to me and said, “Mr. Suzuki?” It was Paul! I could not recognized him since he wore beard.
I recognized Mr. & Mrs. Water soon. They wore Sunday-suits. Mr. Walter wore nice clean shirt and suit, just like when he was in Japan.

Paul parked his car at the best parking space; for “handicapped.”

He works as a social-worker for handicapped people. So he is a professional to take care elderly people. He took me to the neighborhood of Mr. & Mrs. Walter’s house where they were raised. Mr. Walter was born in Iowa and moved to State of Washington when he was youth. Mrs. Walter was born here.

It used to be a farming land, but a few farming land remain, and it turned out to be mostly residential area.
Yest not high building at all, so when we drove to the hill, we could see nice views of countryside. Moreover, I could see several snow-covered mountains including St. Helena and Mt. Hood.
Paul took us to the house of Mr. & Mrs. Walter after the tour. It was about sun-set time.

Mr. Walter took me to his study from which we could see beautiful sun-set over the Colombia River.

Debbie, Paul’s wife joined us and Mrs. Water and Debbie cooked dinner together.

After having dinner, I handed over Kikko’s present and her leter to them. It was special “yokan” by famous shop called Toraya. When I cut the “yokan” you can see the shape of Mt. Fuji. They liked it very much.

As for Kikko’s letter, Paul read for them. They all liked her letter and very much impressed by her English.

After the dinner, we had a slide show from a stock of thousands of slide they took while they were in Japan.
Paul showed about 50 of them, but they were all interesting. Mostly these pictures were taken in 1950 and 1960. Some of them, immediately after they arrived in Japan in 1949.
After the slide show at around 10 pm, Paul and Debbie went their home. Mr. & Mrs. Walter provided me a room with two single beds.

At the corner of the room there was a panel on which many family pictures on it. There was even a picture of a baby in 1920. It must be Mr. Walter who is 93 years old now.

This was my 10th night in this trip in Vancouver, WA.

シアトルに着いてからずっと曇りまたは小雨。今日はクリスが出勤すればもう会えないので6時半に彼を見送った。
その後、この旅ではじめて絵葉書を書いた。相手は喜久子、薫子さん、テルチャン、ベルナルト、エリックの五人ですべてナイアガラの絵はがきだ。
いちばんの見どころはやはりナイアガラ瀑布だったかなと思う。ロイスとクレイグは10時きっかりに迎えに来た。ヘジャンはそれまで寝ていた。きっと公認会計士の樹弁勉強で疲れていたのだろう。
彼女が前日に作ってくれたサンドイッチとりんごをもらって家を出た。
いったんロイスとクレイグの家へ寄り、アムトラック料金78ドルを支払い、二人にシアトルの駅まで送ってもらった。
駅では座席の指定を受ける所まで付き合ってもらい、6号車の12番に座ろうとしたが、先客がいた。なんとダブルブッキングだ。

車掌のところへ文句を言いに行くと平然とダイニングカーへ行けと言う。ダイニングカーの広い窓の席に座り、ビールを注文して風景を楽しんでいると、車掌が来て4号車の6番を新たに割り当ててくれた。
車窓から見る外の風景は美しい。特にアメリカ西海岸を北から南に向かって走っているわけで、右側は太平洋の海やら、入り江やら、湖やらで、いくら見ても見あきない。

通路側だったが隣はフレンドリーな黒髪の少女。席は3つしかない部屋だからグレードアップなのだろうか。気持ちよくバンクーバーまでの車の旅を楽しんだが、アムトラックは30分遅れてバンクーバー駅に着いた。
ホームは特に持ち上がってはなく地面と同じ高さ。すぐにポールが私を見つけた。私はポールがすぐにわからなかった。上品な髭を蓄えていたからだ。
彼は62歳というから私より3歳若い。ウォルター先生夫妻はすぐに分かった。感激の再開。

ポールの運転でお二人の懐かしい近隣の家々とくに生家やお二人が通った学校などを回ってもらった。

やや小高い丘の上からはセントヘレンやフード山、レイニア山、それにコロンビア川が見えた。
昔の牧場や農場はほとんど住宅に代わっていたが、一部牧場が残っていた。
ポールは奥さんのデビーと連絡をとり適切な時間まで車で廻ってくれた。

まだ夕陽が沈む前に家へ到着、ウォルターさんはコロンビア川の対岸に夕陽が沈むのが良く見える自分の書斎に案内してくれた。

書斎の机の上にはパソコンがありインターネット接続も可能だが、ダイヤルアップ接続のため接続速度が極端に遅い。私のブログも見ることはできるが写真はなかなか現れない。それでもSNCCのカテゴリーを開いてみせたりした。
1階へ降りるとアイリーン(ミセス・ウォルター)がデビー(ポールの嫁さん)とともに夕食の支度をしていた。
夕食はハムや野菜を中心にしたシンプルなものでスープがなかったのがややものたりなかった。
食後、喜久子からウォルターご夫妻へのプレゼントで「高嶺羹」を開いて私が小さく切った。これは虎屋の高級羊羹で切ると断面に富士山が現れる。みな喜んでくれた。

また、喜久子が書いたウォルターさん宛ての手紙はポールが読んだ。二人とも、いや四人とも良い内容に感動を受けていたようだ。

食後、さまざまな話をしたがロチェスターのラップ先生の所でみた「神が日本に残した指紋」の話をした。
ポールの発案でスライドショーをしてもらった。当初、私が30代初期の頃と思われる写真1枚(若い時のアイリーンとウォルターさんの間に位置している)だけ見せるつもりだったようだが、1950年代のころの写真を含む50枚ほどの写真をみせてもらった。
ロイスの若い頃の写真は息をのむような美しさだ。また、ポールも実にハンサムだ。私はもっと見たかったが、ポールが遠慮したようで、9時少し前にポールとデビーは退出した。

私のために用意してくれた部屋はシングルベッドが2つあり、そのコーナーには家族写真のパネルがあった。これは良く整理されていて、ウォルター家の歴史がわかるものだった。

私はそもそも子供の頃の写真などほどんどない。1920年の誕生以来、こうして写真に残せるとはなんと素晴らしいことだと思った。
こうして旅行第10日目の夜はウォルター家の歴史の写真とともに眠った。
