140201 IDP (International Dinner Party) on Lunar New Year’s Day

Date: Feb. 1, 2014 (Sat)

Place: Hanpit Apartment 128-101

Participants: Grace & Barnabas　as the host and hostess. Beside them, a Korean volunteer and Tania helped them at kictchen. The guests were more than 60 from more than 16 countries.

When I arrived at their apartment, there were only the host-couple and Tania. But soon, the living room was filled with so many people.

It was one day after the Lunar New Year and still during the Korean New Year holidays.

Grace & Barnabas held the open house as International Dinner Party, so many foreigners in Daejeon could join.

The special menu for the New Year Day was “TTok-kuk” or Korean soup with rice-cake.

We (Japanese) have similar soup called “zoni(雑煮)”in Japan. The rice-cake, which is called “TTok떡”are called “Mochi餅(モチ)” in Japan.

I love “Zoni” very much. But I also like “Ttok-kuk”too. I ate two cups of this soup, but it was not popular among Westers.

Among Western-guests, I noticed John who joined Teadonhikers’hike on Christmas Day last year.

He has beautiful beard so I clearly remembered him.

He is from Melborne in Australia. He is a professor at a university in Melborne. He got a whole year vacation from his university.

He attended the morning Buddhist service at Musangsa in Gyeryongsan with Jim.

So he seems interested in oriental philosophy and Buddhism.

After everybody had supper, Grace made us introduced ourselves. At this point, there were about 50 people from 15 countries.

We took several group pictures, then we had music time.

Jim played the ukulele again and we sang “You are my sunshine” together.

Then Grace played “Arilang” with her ocarina.

Then we all sang the song in Korean language.

A Korean young lady had beautiful voice. She sang “Arilang” then taught us how to sing this son.

After singing Arilang, Tania took a role of MC and made us play a game of “Rock-paper-scissors.”

We ended the party at 7 pm.

参加者：主催者はグレイス＆バルナバ(韓国)で台所の支援は韓国人のボランティア一人とインドネシア人のタニア、客は60人以上、国は 16か国以上。

私がきっかり5時に到着した時、グレイス夫妻の他はKIハウスのアルバイトのタニアしかいなかった。

しかしすぐに続々と外国人が到着した。先着順に食事を始め、一巡したころ、自己紹介を始めた。

自己紹介が終わった時点で約40人、15か国だったが、特に多かったのはベトナム人、インドネシア人、イラン人たちだった。

一巡してからも外国人たちが次々と到着、6:45の時点で50名を超えたようだった。

12月25日のストンコルハイクに参加したオーストラリア人ジョンが来て話をした。

彼はメルボルン大学の教授で1年間の有給休暇中だが、もうすぐ終わり、帰るところだという。

ジョンは比較言語学が専門のようだ。彼は最近、関西を旅行し、奈良がたいへん気に入ったと言う。

もしかしたら日本へ仕事に来るかもしれないと言っていた。

ジム同様無想寺に通っているのだから仏教または東洋哲学に興味があるのかもしれない。

今回の特別メニューは正月にふさわしく韓国式のお雑煮で、私は大好きだ。

だが、アジア人以外はあまり好まないようで、せっかくタニアが居間のテーブルに運んできたのにずいぶん余ってしまった。

食事が終わった時点でいったん集合写真を撮り、その後、今回もジムのウクレレの伴奏で「You are my sunshine」を歌った。

次はグレイスがオカリナで「アリラン」を演奏した後、韓国語での歌唱指導があった。

韓国人の若い女性が美声を披露し、また、歌唱指導も行った。

玄関には靴が山積みになり、リビングルームも立錐の余地もないほど客が集まった。

今回はスタートが5時と早かったため、終了も7時ごろと比較的早く終わった。

次回は2月の第4週である。
