Mt. Haguro is one of Three Dawa Mountains (Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, Mount Yudonosan: Dewa means Yamagata and Akita Prefecture in modern Japan).

Since my wife was born in Tsuruoka, I often visited her hometown and therefore, I climbed mountains in this area.

It was my annual family event to visit her over-nighty mother until early 2016 when she passed away. So, I used to climb Mt. Haguro almost every year.

Two years ago, 2015, I went to the foot of Mt. Haguro soon after we arrived at my wife’s old home (actually her elder brother built a nice modern house and whenever we visited her mother, we stayed overnight at his nice house.)

I took a local bus from S Mall in front of JR Tsuruoka Station to Mt. Haguro. The bus was to go to the shrine, but I intensionally got off at the foot of Mt. Haguro and enjoyed a short snowy trekking up to the shrine.

There is a beautiful five-story wooden pagoda which was built during Muromachi Period (1336 – 1573).

This beautiful pagoda is a national treasure built in 1372 among over 1000 year-old Japanese cedar trees.

There are many small shrines, each shrine is supposed to enshrine each god in Japan mostly from Nihon-shoki (the oldest chronicles of Japan).

I enjoyed eating and drinking at the old restaurant at the bus stop, then I took the bus to a local hot spring as usual.

My wife picked me up at the hot spring, and we headed for a traditional Japanese Inn called “Tamugi-so” this time.

I took a night bus to Tokyo next day to return to my home in Ofuna. It was nice to see my mother-in-law, to enjoy a ryokan stay with my wife, and hot spring as well as snow mountain trekking all at once.

前日茨城県かすみがうら市の義弟の家を車で出発し、朝8:15分に鶴岡市文下(ほうだし)の妻の実家に到着した。

朝食後、妻に羽黒山頂行のバスがでるSモールまで車で送ってもらい、10:40発のバスに乗った。

バスの中で居眠りをしてしまい、羽黒山センターを乗り越して目が覚めた。１停留所を歩いて戻り、参拝道の登山を開始した。

五重塔の前で記念撮影をすませ、火石のところで簡易橇遊びをしている地元の若者3人に出会った。

その後、5人組に2度すれ違ったが、追い越す者はいなかった。途中、一時、雪が止んだが、神社に着くころはかなり激しく雪が降った。

今年から参拝順路が設定され、神社前は一方通行となって、神社を横切ることはできなかった。

バス停に着いたのは1時20分で、次のバスまでちょうど1時間待ち時間があった。

いつものとおり、茶屋の2階で日本酒と煮込みを注文してバスを待った。また、持参したカップラーメンとSモールで買ったラーメンの2個に湯を注いで食べた。

さらに持参した洋酒も飲み、バスの中ではすっかりいい気持になった。妻とケータイで連絡を取り合い、湯ポカの手前の黒瀬で下車し、妻が軽でピックアップしてくれた。

ここから田麦荘までは約30分ぐらいだったようだ。田麦荘で妻のダンスの生徒が夫婦で投宿しているところに合流した。

この日は田麦荘で一泊し、翌日、鶴岡ホテル前から出発するバスに乗って東京へ戻り、自宅へ戻った。
