Open College (Australia) Certificate Ⅲ in Individual Support (Disability) Module 2.1.1 (1) Overview

A fundamental role of disability support workers is to work in partnership with individuals with disability to plan for, and then implement, individualized plans.

A significant aspect of the disability support worker’s role is to ensure the client’s support requirements are met in a way that is responsive to their needs and preferences.

The emphasis of an individualized plan is on goals and activities that foster the individual’s participation and independence in a meaningful way, and you will learn about these ideas in this module.

Today, more people who have disabilities choose to remain living in the community and there is a broader range of services and supports available to help them to do this.

For those who do require residential care, the environment provided is more homelike and flexible; giving residents more opportunities to stay in control and make choices about the ways they are supported. The ways support services are delivered needs to be carefully planned to ensure the individual needs of the client can be met in a way that supports their independence, their preferences and their choices.

Communication underlies so much of what we do as disability support workers and supervisors, and in this module you will also learn about empowering communication, person-centered communication, respectful and effective communication amongst other concepts.

The legal and ethical considerations of disability support work are also considered and you will learn about some terms such as 'duty of care注意義務', and the roles and responsibilities of all those involved in disability support work.

You will no doubt encounter some ethical decision making and conflicts of interest in your future job roles, and this module will assist in how you respond to these situations.
