110723 Mt.

Hiking Date: July 23, 2011 (1st day)

Destination (mountain): Mt. Chokai (2,236m)

Hiking course: Hokodate – Saino Kawara – Ohama Lodge – Shimekake – Senjadani – Omuro Lodge (Mt. Shinzan)

Partner: Mr. Matsumoto

I climbed Mt. Chokai with Susumu, my brother-in-law, and Ms. Hwang, my Korean friend in Japan last summer. But it was a day hiking and we could make only up to the middle of the mountain (Ohama Lodge). So, I decided to climb this mountain again, and this time, stay overnight at the lodge, so that I can reach at the top of the mountain. This time, the partner was Mr. Matsumoto, my hiking mentor from Kyushu.

We took the night-bus named “Yuhi” from Tokyo Station North Marunouchi Exit at the night of July 22.

We arrived at Sakata, the final destination of the bus, at 6:30 a.m. on July 23. We changed the bus to Hokodate there. We had breakfast and lunch at a conbinance store near the bus top. The bus left at 8:05 a.m.

We arrived at Hokodate at 9:30 a.m. It must be about 1000 meter altitude. We began walking at 9:45.

It was a foggy day and we could not see long distance very well. After climbing up the gentle uphill for about one hour, we arrived at Sainokawara Valley. There was plenty amount of snow left there and we saw a small statue of “Jizo” or “Ksitigarbha”with an apron and a headwear. Around the “jizo” there were a lot of “chinguruma”a kind of alpine flora which looked like pinwheel.

["Schizocodon soldanelloides" or "Iwakagami",

We arrived at Ohama Lodge at noon. We had our lunch near the lodge. It was a nice place to view Lake Chokai (crater lake) and snowy gorge. There were plenty of alpine flora there, too.

After having lunch, we headed for Hacchouzaka via Odagahara, and then we arrived at Shimekake at 1:38 p.m. We could see clumps of “Nikko Kisuge” and “Chokai Azami.”The latter one is a kind of thistle you can see only on Mt. Chokai.

From Shimekake, there were two routes, one through Senjadani (literally “the valley of 1000 snakes), and the other was “Gairinzan” or “somma”of Mt. Chokai. We decided to take Senjadani course for the 1st day. It was a valley with plenty of snow remained. Yet, we could see a lot of beautiful alpine flora, such as "Iwagikyou" and "Tsugazakura." We arrived at the lodge on the top of Mt. Chokai (It was also a shrine called “Ohmonoimi Shrine.”) at 3:36 p.m.

After having check-in, we left our bags there and we took an ice-box with beer, and headed for the highest point of the mountain (called “Shinzan.” “Shinzan”is a lava dome formed when Mt. Chokai had a big eruption in 1801, about 200 years ago.

There was a plenty of snow remained behind the lodge. We began climbing Shinzan at 3:45 and arrived at the top of Shinzan at 4:00 p.m. We celebrated our success of climbing Mt. Chokai with beer and came down to the lodge by 4:30.

The total accommodation of the lodge was 120. Since it was the weekend, the lodge was completely full.

The capacity of our room was 30. It was really a small space for 30 people. Mr. Matsumoto and I shared one sheet of “futon.” A group from Akita, came to our room later. They were mostly middle aged men and women. They were happy-going people and quite noisy. They enjoyed themselves with brought-in alcohole, after the supper. They reminded me of AhToSan people in Korea.

It rained in the evening. The people of Akita group got wet. But it cleared up at night. I saw a beautiful moon and stars in the sky at mightnight.

["Kisuge" in clumps, キスゲの群落、"기스게"의 군락 ]["Chokai Azami" or Thistle of Chokai, チョウカイアザミ(鳥海薊), 조카이아자미]

[Snowy gorge in Senja Valley,
