110802 Mt. Fuji (the 1st day)富士山(3776m)第1日目

Hiking Date: Aug. 2 (Tus), 2011 (the 1st day)

Destination (mountain): Gansomuro Lodge on the 8th station of Mt. Fuji (3,250m)

Hiking course: The 5th Station of Lake Kagaguchi Course – upto the 8th Station

Partner: Mr. Matsumoto and his nephew, Mr. Toshiyuki Mutabe.

I climbed Mt. Fuji 5 times in the past 5 years. So this is the 6th hike to Mt. Fuji in 6 years. This time, with Mr. Matsumoto and his nephew, Mr. Mutabe who is a firefighter in Osaka.

Mr. Mutabe came to Kamakura from Osaka previous night. We met at Ofuna station in the morning of Aug. 6. We took Shonan Shinjuku Line train to Shinjuku and joined the tour “Travel Road: Climbing Mt. Fuji Tour”in Shinjuku. (Total cost of the round trip, stay overnight at the lodge and supper and breakfast was 12, 300 yen.)

We left Shinjuku at 7:30. We had a short stop at Dangozaka Service Area. We arrived at “Unjokaku” at the 5th station at 11:00. It was raining a little bit when we arrived there.

After having “Udong”noodle and “onigiri” made by Kikko, we began walking at 11:40. I saw several horses covered by sheets at the entrance of the trail.

[Horses being hit by rain,

At first, we actually walk “down” along the gentle slope. Then we arrived at the real uphill trail at 11:54.

I saw several “Lilium medeoloides” or “Kuruma-yuri” and “Rhododendron subg. Hymenanthes”or “Shakunage” around there.

[“Rhododendron subg. Hymenanthes”or “Shakunage”

Since the trails on Mt. Fuji were mostly covered by lava or volcanic materials, there were few alpine flora compareing with other high mountains, such as Japan Alps, Oze or Mt. Chokai. Yet I saw a few small flowers along the trail.

We arrived at the fisrt lodage on the 7th station at 13:15. The trail from there to 8th station was steep, and rocky. I rembered that Alan had hard time when we walked during the night in 2009.

We arrived at Haku-unso Lodge on the 8th station at 15:00. I used this lodge for the first 3 hikes from 2006 to 2008. This time, the lodge the tour company designated was “Gansomuro” which was one stage higher than Haku-unso.

The rain became hard and when we arrived at Gansomuro at 15:13, we were soaking wet. We had to manage to deal with wet raincoat and boots, and the space we got was very narrow to sleep comfortably. It was only 80 cm wide, and we had to share a top cover with 2 people.

While Mr. Matsumoto and Mr. Mutabe were dealing with their clothes, I went to the dining room with 6 cans of beer and 3 cans of “chuhai.” I found a group of middle aged men, dringking beer. They looked cheerful and pleasant, so I joined them with all my beverages. They were a group of five from Tochigi prefecture. Three of them were drinking while two of them were climbing to the top of Mt. Fuji then.

Mr. Matsumoto and Mr. Mutabe joined us, soon. We had a big party. One of Tochigi hikers was a CEO of a company. He kept ordering extra beer one after another. (A can of 350cc Asahi Dry was 600 yen there.)

The CEO’s name was Mr. Hori. His companion were his subordinates and his friend. His friend’s name was Mr. Sato. He had a cramp in his leg. Mr. Mutabe, a firefighter knew how to deal with such person, took care of his painful leg.

Then their companions who went to the top of Mt. Fuji in rain, came back from their adventure and joined our party.

We had almost 2 hour drinking party, with supper and some other food we prepared.

We all liked each other, and felt like “friends.”If they come to Korea to climb moutains, I promised to guide them, if they come during weekend.

We wrapped up our drinking party at 7 p.m. and went to sleep in the crowded lodge. It stopped raining during the night. This was my 43rd hike for this year.

[At the entrance of the trail,

[“Rhododendron subg.

[The trail between 7th and 8th stations,

[The room temperature at the lodge was 12 degree, 山小屋の室内の温度は摂氏12度、산장의 실내 온도는 섭씨 12도]

[With Tochigi hikers,
