The 2nd day of Hakodate (Hokkaido) Trip

Date: January 10 (Tue) Snow, occasionally fine in Hakodate

Sightseeing City: Hakodate

Tour Course: JR Hakodate St. – Cemetary for foreigners – Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward – The Orthodox Church in Japan – Mt. Hakodate Ropeway Station

Tour Group: Only myself.

The 2nd day of Hakodate Trip. I got up before 6 and went to the restaurant of the hotel at 6:30 a.m. The restaurant is located on the highest floor of the hotel (10th) and it was a buffet style. Grilled fish (sermon and yellowtail) were served by a cook who grilled fish according to orders by guests. All dishes were delicious and I liked “cuttle fish shiokara” the best.

Since the restaurant was on the 10th floor, I could enjoy good views of Hakodate, the port and the mountain called Hakodateyama.

[A view of the dawn-break at Hakodate Port,

When the dawn broke, a lot of crows flew in the town from the mountain. It seems like salalied men came to the office from bed-town to Tokyo every morning.

[JR Hakodate Station in the morning,

The bus-tour started at 9:40. The same sized bus came to the station, but there was only one-passenger, me! The guide explained sightseeing stops only to me!

["The Asaichigo" sightseeing bus; I was the only passenger,

We went to the cemetery for foreginers first. When Matthew Calbraith Perry came to Hakodate with his fleet in 1854, two of his solders died and they were buried at this cemetery.

More than 40 Russians were buried in one of the sections of the cemetery. And there was another sections designated to Chinese people.

[The Russian cemetery (for about 40 Russians),

There was also a section designated to Japanese women who entertained men of various nationalities.

Then the guide took me to the area where many churches of different denominations were. The Orthodox Church in Japan was the most famous and unique church. Then a Catholic and a protestant church as well as Church of England.

After seeing such churches, the guide took me to the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. It was one of the old Western-type building where Taisho Emperer visited when he was Crawn Prince.

The tour ended at the ropeway station at Hakodateyama. I went to the top of Mt. Hakodate twice that day. Day time and evening.

The night view of Hakodateyama is very famous for its beauty, but when I visited at night, the weather was not fabrable and I could not see much lights from the observation deck.

Anyway, I went back to the hotel after the tour. I went out to the town again in the afternoon. This time, I went to the port where “Mashumaru” was locked to the seashore. “Mashumaru” used to be a ferry boat which connected Aomori and Hakodate until they succeeded to connect by Seikan Undersea Tunnel.

When I went to Hakodateyama again in the evening, I just walked from my hotel to the ropeway station.

It was only 30 minutes walk (maybe 2 km) for one way. The road-heating system was effective to melt the snow on the road. I could walk on the street comfortably for both ways.

[Inside of the old public hall (museum),

[A view from the rope-way to Mt. Hakodate,

[Hakodate beer, Hokkaido potatoes and cuttlefish "shiokara",

[The "Seikan" ferryboat museum "Mashummaru",
