Course: Play-ground – Cloud Bridge – Ridge – Top of SeoDaeSan - Charnel Houses – Seongbul Temple (About 7 km, 5 hours)

AhToSan originally planned to go to Sajasan in Gangwondo. But due to few applicants, they changed the destination to Seodaesan, which is much closer from Daejeon.

SeoDaeSan however is one of the 100 best mountains in Korea. It locates in Geumsan and it takes less than one hour by car.
We arrived at the starting point where there was a play-ground at 8 am. It took less than 30 minutes from Daejeon IC.

After taking a group picture at the stairs under the play-ground, we turned left and went into the trail.

We walked along the stream in the valley. Most of the trails were frozen, but we could walk without climbing irons, by steppong on the stones up to the middle of the mountain.
We saw huge mass of ice here and there until the ridge. Most of us put climbing irons near the old cloud bridge.

The bridge looked fragile and it was not a good idea to walk cross the bridge. It looked too dangerous.
So, we walked around the bridge and came to the ridge. Just before reaching the ridge, I offered fruits (grapes and strawberries, this time) as “Suzuki Time.”

There was a natural observatory of a big rock on the ridge. We had lunch next to the rock. It was still at 10 am.
I ate “kimpap” and a cup-ramen for lunch. I offered “pettitoes” or back paw of pig for the members. They liked the food esp. with soju.
After the lunch, I climbed on the rock. There were several pine trees on the rock. I was amazed at the vitality of the trees.
I ate my lunch qickly so I could join the first group of the hikers.

We came to the heliports, then came to the top of the mountain. There was a big pile of stones and it was the sign of the peak.

There was a heavy machine on the top of the mountain. I wondered if they were building “Cable-car” facility there.
When I took a group picture of AhToSan, I saw a man who was on the bus. He is a friend of Jeongdaun, the former president of AhToSan who paid the total cost of the meals at the restaurant when we climbed “WooSanBong” last year.

I wondered how he joined us. He might have come privately and joined us.
It was still 11:20, and we began descending the mountain.
The trail from the top of the mountain was even more steep than the trail to climb and it was completely frozen. It was very dangeours, so I walked down very carefully.
I saw many people coming trom this side. Anyway, we came down to the temple place.
I saw strange constructions on the side of the mountain. Yoro-nim told me that they were "ossuaries" which contained human bones after cremation of dead bodies.

I have never seen such things in Korea. Cremation is common in Japan, but I far as I know, Korea is a country where burial under the earth is common.
According to Yoro, cremation is increasingly poplular in Korea, too.
We arrived at the parking lot where our bus was waiting at 1 pm. We had a wrap-up party at the parking lot.

The menu were: soup with oysters and rice cake, kimch and soju.

The hikers who came from Gyonggido were performing the ceremony called “Shisanje” which means Ceremony to pray the safe hiking for the new year” with a head of pig.
Using a head of pig for such a cememony is very traditional, but AhToSan never used before. I guess it is because the head of pig is more expensive than smoked pork.

And AhToSan usually performs this ceremony at the top of mountains, not at the foot of mountains.
But it might be a good idea to do at the foot of mountains, thus people do not need to bring all necessary things (mostly food) to the mountain.
We finished the party by 2 pm and came to Expo South Gate at 3 pm.
I think it was the earliest time to return, and it was my 5th hike for this year and the 303rd hike as AhToSan Regular Hike for me.

前夜、携帯に入ったメール情報と、民主総務の確認電話により登山地が江原道の獅子山から忠南・錦山の西台山へ変更されたことを知った。出発時間も6時から7時へ変更された。

西台山は大田から大変近いため、アトサンとして行くのは初めてだ。参加申し込みが14人に対し、実際にバスに乗った参加者は17人だったようだ。
頂上では別ルートで現地で合流した、チョンダウン前会長の知人を含め18人だった。
出発地は西台山ドリームレゾートで券売所前の駐車場に着いたのはなんと午前8時。大田ICを出発したのは7時36分だったから30分足らずで到着したことになる。
入山料は、発券所へ行ったヨロとカドクによると一人1000ウォンと言う。

登山道は稜線に出るまで渓谷沿いで、登山路に染み出た水が凍っていてすべりやすい。
かなり稜線にちかいところまでアイゼンなしで乾いた岩の上を選んで歩いたが、あぶなっかしい吊橋が見える地点の凍った急勾配の坂でついにアイゼンを装着した。

この地点から上はアイゼンなしでは危険だった。尾根に出る途中で恒例のスズキタイムでブドウとイチゴを出した。今回は好評で1回でなくなった。

「クルムタリ(雲の橋)」は古びて危ないので渡らず、展望台で写真を撮った後は一気に稜線に登った。

稜線に登り切った場所には立派な岩の連望台がありその下でかなり早い昼食にした。時間はなんとまだ10時だった。

わたしは前日購入しておいたキムパプ1本と持参したカップラーメンを食べた。また、前日購入した後ろ足のトンソクを提供したが、これは量も多く、好評だった。
いち早く昼食を終え、岩の展望台に登ってみた。まったく土がみえない岩の上に根を下ろした松の木に感心する。このような松は台風がきてもびくともしない。むしろ傾斜地のすんなり伸びた木々が根こそぎ倒れるものが多い。

昼食後、先発隊に混じって尾根伝いに出発。昼食をとった場所より一段高いひらけた丘の上にヘリポートがあったが、ここが頂上ではなく、さらに岩場を進んだ小高い丘の上が頂上だった。

頂上には麓から続く作業用のモノレールがあり、重機が1台、大きな穴を掘っていた。麓のリゾートから続くケーブルカーでも作るのだろうか。
西台山には通常の石標はなく、石を積み上げたケルンがあり、その上部の石板に『西台山』とあった。

頂上には、以前、雨傘山にアイゼンなしで登って、ティップリがわりのレストランで19人分の食事を一人で負担したチョンダウン元会長の知人がいた。

公共交通機関を使ってわざわざ来たのだろうか。あとで人数を数えてみると、麓の集合写真より一人多い18人だった。
この時点で11時20分で、あとは下山にかかった。
下山路は山を越えた出発地点とは反対側で、凍った急こう配の坂を下りるとビニールハウスのような庵があり、住民らしい人間の姿も見えた。
こちら側から登る人々の数はかなり多く、すれちがいながら下った。
里山のような雰囲気の部分まで下ると氷はもうなく、みなアイゼンを外したが、アイゼンを最後につけたヨロは最後の麓の小川までアイゼンをつけたまま下り、サランカドクに「チョンケグリ：青ガエル（＝へそまがり）」と言われていた。
この辺からは右側に見える山の裾野にこれまであまり見かけなかった風景が広がっている。ヨロに聞くと「納骨堂」だという。規格をそろえた真新しい納骨堂がずらっとならんでいるのは壮観だ。

これまで韓国の墓は土饅頭ばかりだと思っていたが、最近の風潮では火葬にして骨を壺におさめてこのような納骨堂に入れるスタイルが出てきたようだ。
アトサンのバスは納骨堂を管理する寺の駐車場に駐車していた。バスに到着した時間は1時前だった。
打ち上げパーティはこのバスの前でサランカドクが準備した「カキ入りもち汁」とキムチと焼酎だった。

われわれのテーブルのすぐそばでは京畿道ナンバーのバスの山岳会が豚の頭をかざった祭壇をつくって「始山祭」を執り行っていた。

我々は山の上で「始山祭」を行うが、このように登山後に麓で行うスタイルもあるようだ。これなら豚の頭を始め、供え物を山へ運ぶ必要がなく便利だ。 打ち上げパーティは2時前に終わり、南門には3時前に戻ってきた。
これまでで最も早く終わった山行で、今年5回目、アトサンの合計では303回目の登山だった。
