130206 1st day of US trip: Inchon(仁川)→Detroit(デトロイト)→ Knoxville (Oak Ridgeオークリッジ)

Theme: 12 Day-US-trip (East Coast and West Coast)

Itinerary: Inchon – Detroit – Knoxville – Rochester – Buffalo - Boston – Seattle – Vancouver – Seattle – Tokyo - Inchon

Before the new semester, I planned to travel around USA for two weeks. There were 2 big reasons; one was to visit Alan England in Ork Ridge, Tennessee.

Alan and I have been good friends for nearly 10 years in Korea. To my regret, he was retired from a Korean research institute by the end of 2011. I wanted to visit him in Ork Ridge, Tennessee and experience the trekking with him.

Another reason was to visit Mr. & Mrs. Walter who introduced Jesus Christ to me as my savior about 3 decades and some years ago.

Mr. Water recently published an autobiography called “The Unseen Hand” and sent it to me. The book made me see him and his lovely wife, Eileen once again, so I decided to visit them.

Since Alan lives in East Coast and Mr. & Mrs. Water live in West Coast of United States, I also have some friends to visit each area.

Mr. & Mrs. Rupp who had been the missionaries to Japan for many years, live in Rochester, NY, and Mr. & Mrs. Nagano whom I met when I was late 20s, live in Boston.

Also, a young guy whom I met in the ferry boat between Shimonoseki and Busan about 3 years ago, Chris had enthusiasm to climb Korean mountains with AhToSan for about 10 times. He married a Korean lady and now they live in Seattle.

And the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter, together with her husband live in Seattle, too.

So, it was necessary for me to have a 12 night-trip to USA to visit them all.

Feb. 6 was the first day of my trip. I tried to travel as light as possible. So I had a carry-in bag and a small bag for carrying my computer.

I went to the limousine bus-stop at Government Complex by a city-bus, then went to Inchon by the limousine bus.

I used Delta as the main carrier for this trip. The first stop was Detroit. It was a huge airport.

I saw a mono-rail inside of the building. There was a huge tunnel connecting A and B/C concorses.

I saw a movie named “Lincoln” twice on board. It was a good movie.

From Detroit to Knoxivile, it was a small airplane. The number of passengers was about 40. The Knoxivile Airport was also small. I arrived at Knoxivile Airport at about 10 pm. Alan was there waiting for me.

He bought a new car (Volkswagen) and drove me to a restaurant where his caving friends were having a party-after-the-meeting.

He introduced me as a buddy in Korea. Alan bought me a local beer: Adam Smith Alpine Spring and he ordered “onion rings.”

After a little talk with the cavers, he also dropped in a super market called “Food City.” It was really a big super market.

We bought some food for breakfast, and finally arrived at his home at 11:40.

The first day of my US trip was a long flight over the Pacific ocean and American continent.

今回の約2週間の米国旅行の主な目的は２つ。１つは一昨年限りで10年以上に及ぶ韓国での生活を終え、米国へ帰国したアランを訪ねること。もう１つは30数年前、私をイエスに導いてくれたウォルター先生ご夫妻を訪ねること。

アランは東海岸のテネシー州、オークリッジに住み、ウォルター先生ご夫妻はワシントン州のバンクーバーにお住まいだ。

東海岸では、オークリッジのほか、ロチェスター在住の日本の母教会で奉仕されたラップ先生ご夫妻を訪ね、また、私のNTT企業内教育機関で知り合った先輩ご夫妻の住むぼすとんを訪ねることとした。

また、西海岸では、3年前関釜フェリーで偶然に知り合い、その後アトサンに10回参加し、昨年秋の結婚式に招待してくれた若い友人クリスと、ウォルター先生ご夫妻の娘夫婦の住むシアトルを訪ねることにした。

初日の旅は仁川からデトロイト経由でテネシーのノックスビル(Knoxiville)へ向かった。

荷物はキャリインバック１つとパソコンをいれた街歩き用のリュックだけ。

身軽なのでタクシーはやめて604番バスで政府庁舎前へ向かった。1時間前にバスに乗ったので1時15分にバス停に到着。50分も待合室で待つことになった。

バスは予定通りで、ガラガラだった。デルタはEカウンターで、座席は35H。通路側も窓側もすでにいっぱいで、あらかじめ予約しておけばよかったと思ったが、通路側に座った男はトイレの回数は途中3回、私は2回、窓側の男は1回だったのでこれで良かったわけだ。

フライト中の映画ははじめと終わりに観たリンカーンがよかった。ただし字幕は中国語だった。

離陸が1時間以上も遅れてどうなるかとおもったが、デトロイト到着はほぼ予定通り午後６時で、入国審査もスムーズに済んだ。

デトロイトはデルタのハブ空港で乗り換え便はAからずらっと12×5/6列あったから100便近くあるのかもしれない。Kだけでも数個あったがKnoxvilleはすぐに見つかり、B3へ向かった。

コンコースA内の上部にモノレールが走り、B/Cコンコースへはシカゴのように大きな地下のベルトの上を歩く。

米国はオーストラリア同様、水が高い。オレンジジュースが2.19と水より安い。Fly Biteで買ったTrail Mixは1.79ドルと安くてうまい。

Knoxvilleには予定よりすこし早く10時前に到着。キャリインバッグが頭上の収容場所に収まらないので搭乗口に置き、降りるときに受け取るサービスを使ったため、出口を出たのは10時ごろ。

飛行機は40数人のりの小型機で、出迎えもほとんどおらず、すぐにアランがわかった。アランの車は帰国してから購入したというVWで、アランの家へ向かった。

途中、今夕はケイバーの集いがあり、NZの洞窟のプレゼンがあったそうで、その二次会の場へ顔を出した。場所はアップルビーというレストランで、男女8人のケイバーが談笑中だった。

直近の男女と親しく話をし、注文を取りに来たウェイトスタッフにはアランは玉ねぎのリング揚げ、私はお勧めのシーズンビールでAdam Smith Alpine Springの小瓶を注文した。料金は4+8で12ドル。これに15%のチップをアランが払ってくれた。

う～ん。ビールが高い。しかし味は良かった。11時を過ぎていたが途中Food Cityという大きな食料店で翌朝の朝食のパンと牛乳を買った。

アランの家には11:40頃到着した。リビングにBR2つのこじんまりとした家で今の後ろは傾斜のある林になっている。

旅行第1日は長い飛行機の旅だった。
