After climbing Devil’s Racetrack, Alan took me to Norris Dam in the Clinch River in Tennessee.

Norris Dam is a hydroelectric and flood control structure located on the Clinch River in Anderson County and Campbell County, Tennessee, USA.
Its construction in the mid-1930s was the first major project for the Tennessee Valley Authority, which had been created in 1933 to bring economic development to the region and control the rampant flooding that had long plagued the Tennessee Valley.
The dam was named in honor of Nebraska Senator George Norris (1861–1944), a longtime supporter of government-owned power in general, and supporter of TVA in particular.

Norris Dam is a straight concrete gravity-type dam. The dam is 1860 feet (570 m) long and 265 feet (81 m) high. Norris Lake, the largest reservoir on a tributary of the Tennessee River, has 33,840 acres (137 km²) of water surface and 809 miles (1302 km) of shoreline. The dam has a maximum generating capacity of 131,400 kilowatts.

Since it was completed in 1936, the dam is 77 years old now. Yet it is still working all right as it was quoted above.

I was impressed to see many pleasure-boats in the lake. American people really like “mobility” and enjoy “luxury.”

After seeing the dam, Alan took me to an old water mill along a branch of the Clinch River.

It looked like a heritage museum, but it was closed and the door was locked, therefore, I could see only from outside through window.

The sign along the trail says “The walking trail only, no horses no bikes.” I wondered if there were horse-riders around there.

We went back to Alan’s home after the sightseeing Norris Dam State Park and the water-mill. Then went out for the potluck party.
“Oak Ridge Public Library”

The potluck party started at 6 pm. Since we had a little time, we dropped in “Oak Ridge Public Library.”

There were several big map of the state of Tennessee hanging on the walls. Some of them were sterically-bulky.

Alan explained the location of Devil’s Racetrack and the Cumberland Plateau and geo-scientific formation of the land. He is really a scientist.

“Potluck Party at ORUUC (he Oak Ridge Unitarian-Universaliist Church)”
A potluck is a gathering of people where each person or group of people may contribute a dish of food prepared by the person or the group of people, to be shared among the group.
So Alan called Gattis Pizza and ordered a big pizza to be shared with other people.

“ORUUC” is a part of UU (Unitarian-Universalizm)” which was new to me.

The party was a pure party, no speech or even no appointed MC for the party.
We arrived at the hall of the church before 6 pm. There are several tables on which beverage including beer and wine, and snacks were available.
People enjoy talking over such snacks and beverage until 6 pm.
All participants put their contributions on a long table and at 6 pm, they bean picking up whatever they like from the table.
Alan introduced me to many people as “his buddy in Korea.” In deed, we were buddies in Korea.
Some of them gave me deep impressions. One of them was “April” who brought rosemary bread. The bread had strong flavor of “rosemary” and I liked it.

Another one was a gentleman who had a chic hat on his head. His name is “Rob” and a father of two daughters. He took the role of “baby-sitter” for his daughters and their friends.
He brought a soup of venison and rye. He said he cooked a deer which he shot by himself. He even said he could make “sashimi” of best part of venison!
When I told that I would fly to Rochester two days later, they warned about the bad weather. It was raining outside that evening, but some powerful snow storm hitting in the eastern part of the United States.
Alan checked the flight-schedule from Knoxville to Detroit and then to Rochester after returning to his home. They were on schedule at least that night.
The party was over at 7 pm. Before ending the party, Alan took me to the main hall of the church. It looked similar to the Christian churches, but the church accept various kinds of religions including Christianity and Buddhism.

It seems very generous religion than other traditional religions.
When we returned to Alan’s home, I asked him to use his washing machine.
It was my 2nd day of my 12-day trip to USA.

次の見学地は1930年代ルーズベルト大統領の大恐慌対策の1つとして実施した公共事業の１つでTVA(Tennessee Valley Authority)が多く手掛けたテネシー川流域に建設したダムの中で最初のダムであったというNorris Damを見学した。

このダムは今から77年前の1936年に完成したものであるが今でも現役で、ダムの水は満々として放流口にはダムの水が現在も勢いよく流れ発電が続いている。
ダム湖には多くのプレジャーボートが浮かび、別荘のようにして使っている人々がいると言う話が面白い。

その後、支流のそばに降りて、昔の水車小屋を外から見学し、町へ戻った。(水車小屋には鍵が掛かっていて入れず、窓から中を覗き込むだけである。)

その後我々はいったんアランの家へ戻って、1時間ほど休憩し、アランはシャワーを浴びて、洗濯をした。
この日、アランはオークリッジのある宗教団体が主催する「持ち寄り夕食会」に参加する予定で、私も同行した。

夕食会は6時からで、その前に時間があったので、我々はオークリッジの公立図書館に立ち寄った。
オークリッジ公立図書館は中も大きく、蔵書も多く、駐車場も完備していた。

この図書館には大きなテネシー州の地図がいくつか壁に掛けてあり、その中には地表の高低もわかる立体的な地図もあった。

アランはこの地図の前に私を案内し、この日登山した「悪魔の競技場」の位置や地学的な説明をしてくれた。
また、持ち寄り夕食会に参加するため、ピザ専門店へ寄って、あからじめ電話で予約しておいたピザを受け取った。

「ORUUC主催の持ち寄り夕食会」

持ち寄り夕食会はORUUC(オークリッジ・ユニテリアン・ユニヴァーサリスト教会が主催するもので、UUはユニテリアン・ユニヴァーサリズム（Unitarian Universalism：通称UU)という宗教団体だ。

後で知ったことだが、この本部はマサチューセッツ州ボストンにあり、私はこの後、ボストンを訪問した時、偶然その建物のそばを歩いた。
夕食会は6時からで時間前に来た人々はスナックを食べ、ビールやワインを飲み、談笑している。私もワインを半グラス味わったがやや甘すぎるようだった。
パーティは1時間ほどで、多くの人々に紹介された。最初にローズマリーブレッドを持参したエイプリルという女性と話をした。
彼女は40歳代だろうか。年配の人々も多かったが、我々と同席したロブという男性は50代か。しっかりした黒い帽子をかぶり、CHP コンサルタントという会社を経営していると言う。
二人の小学生ぐらいの娘の父親のようで、娘の友人たちのぶんまで面倒を見ているようだった。
また彼が持参したのは自分でしとめた鹿の肉とライ麦をつかったスープだ。このスープは味が薄すぎたようで、ロブ自身が調味料を加えていた。
また、彼の話によると鹿の最上の部分は刺身にして食べると言う。仕留めた獲物を自分で処理し、料理まで作るとは、開拓者精神が生きているなと感じた。
この宗派は超宗教の教えのようでキリスト教徒も仏教徒もいるという。いわば宗教の独善性と排他性を排した宗教と言えようか。

保守的キリスト教が強く除外している同性愛者も受け入れているようで、主催者側の一人でキッチン内にいた女性は仏教徒だという。

パーティは7時ごろお開きになり、スピーチも説教も何もなく、純粋に持ち寄り談笑パーティだから、大田のグレイスが主催していた金曜日の夜のパーティのようなものか。これなら無宗教のアランも気持ちよく参加できる。
夕方降り始めた雨はこのころは止んで、帰宅したのは8時前だった。パーティでの話題の中で私が土曜日の午後、デトロイトを経由してロチェスターへ行くと言ったら、スノーストームが来るから空港の状況、フライト状況を確認するように忠告された。
もっともである。帰ってからアランにインターネットでフライト状況を確認してもらった。この時点ではデトロイト行きのフライトは運行されていた。
また、アランには私の洗濯物をマシンにかけてもらった。着替えが少ないので、洗濯を頼めるのはおおいに助かる。
この日は米国での第２日目で、宿泊は2泊目である。
