110113 Mt. Shimagare/Chausudake in North Yatsugatake (北八ヶ岳の縞枯山と茶臼岳)

Date: Jan. 13 (Thursday) Fine

Place: Mt. Shimagare (2403m) and Chausudake (2384m), North Yatsugatake (Chino-city, Nagano Prefecture)

Course: Pilatus Tateshina Ropeway Top Station (Tsuboniwa) – Shimagare Rodge – Mt. Shimagare – Mt. Chausudake –Mugikusa Pass – Hutte Mugikusa (About 6 km, 3 hours)

Mr. Matsumoto stayed overnight at our home. My wife drove us to the station in the morning. We took a train of Shinjuku Shonan Line at 7:50 a.m. and changed trains to Azusa N. 9 leaving Shinjuku at 9 a.m.

We arrived at Chino at 11:24 and took a bus to Pilatus Ropeway Station at 11:55. We arrived at the bus terminal at 13:00.

We took Pilatus Tateshina Ropeway which could carry a maximum of 100 passengers. There were about a dozen skiers and snow boarders beside us.

The view from the huge gondola was very good. Thousands of snow covered trees were just beautiful. The altitude of base station is 1771m, while the one of top station is 2237m, therefore the vertical difference is 466m.

We began walking at 13:45 after putting climbing irons and spatterdash at the station (Tsuboniwa.)

We originally planned to stay at Shimagare Rodge, which was close to the ropeway station. We planned to climb Mt. Yokodake (2480m), leaving our bag at the rodge. But we found out that the rodge had been closed. So, Mr. Matsumoto called another rodge named Hutte Mugikusa which was 6 km away from the ropeway station.

It was a gentle slope until Shimagare Rodge. But from the rodge to Mt. Shimagawa was a bit steep slope. Since Mr. Matsumoto hurried to the newly reserved Hutte, I was out of my breath. (Mr. Matsumoto told me later that I looked rather pale.)

When we reached at the top of Mt. Shimagare at 14:45, I felt much better. The view of the wood was wonderful.

All trees were covered by snow. We could see “ebino shippo” or “tails of prawn or losbster” which were actually fog deposit developed on trees (esp. dried branches.)[When I climbed Mt. Aso with Mr. Matsumoto one year ago, I saw such fog deposit/ hoarfrost on the grass and rocks for the first time.]

We arrived at another peak named Chausudake at 15:27. Then we went down to Kusamugi Pass. There was a route 299 of national highway. Hutte Mugikusa was located only 5 minutes from the pass.

The accommodation of the hutte was 150, but there were only 2 guests that night. The temperature of the entrance was minus 9 degree centigrade. It was very cold even within the building.

The fare of one stay with two meals was 7500 yen in case of “shared room.” The room was small yet for 6 people. The female manager took us to the room. There were 3 different heating facilities: kerosene stove, electric fan heater, and Japanese style “kotatsu.” We used all of them, yet we felt cold. We used 3 blankets for each thtat night (We had to stop using kerosene stove when we slept.)

松本氏は前夜、我が家で泊まった。家で朝食後、妻に大船駅まで車で送ってもらった。

大船を7時50分発の新宿湘南ラインで新宿へ。新宿9時発のあづさ9号で茅野に11:24着。ここで11:55発のバスでピラタス蓼科ロープウェイの山麓駅(標高1771m)に13:00着。

ピラタス蓼科ロープウェイは100人乗りの大型ロープウェイで山頂駅(2237m)へ13:40着。乗客はスキーやスノーボードの客ばかりで登山客はわれわれのみ。標高差466mをぐんぐん上がり、眼下には樹氷の森が展開する。

山頂駅でアイゼンとスパッツを装着して13:45に出発(北八ヶ岳坪庭は13:48)。ここで、当初宿泊を予定していた縞枯山荘がこの日は休業中であることを知った。

当初は縞枯山荘に荷物を置いて、北横岳(2480m)を登山する予定であったが、急遽宿泊先を変え、約6キロの山越えをして草麦峠の草麦ヒュッテに宿泊することにした。

山頂駅前の坪庭から縞枯山荘までは雪のみ深い平坦な道だったが、ここからの最初の上りが急こう配で、先を急ぐ松本氏の後について行こうとすると息が切れて苦しかった。

尾根に出てからはずっと楽になり、縞枯山には14:45に到着した。

尾根歩きはずっと楽だが、雪が深い。縞枯山から茶臼山まではほぼ1時間の雪道で茶臼山の標識には15:27に到着した。

この尾根歩きで吹きさらしの樹木には樹氷/霧氷の1形態である見事な「エビのしっぽ」を撮影することができた。(私は1年前、松本氏と九州の阿蘇山を登山した時、岩に付着した「エビのしっぽ」を始めてみた。)

茶臼山から南に約30分ほど下ると国道299号の草麦峠に着いた。(16:15)、そして麦草ヒュッテには16:20に到着した。



ヒュッテは150人宿泊できる施設だが、この日の客は我々二人だけで山小屋の中はどこも非常に寒かった。

女将が案内してくれた2階のちいさな部屋「しゃくなげ」には石油ストーブとファンヒーターがついていて、そのうえ電気ゴタツがあったが、それでも非常に寒かった。

料金は相部屋料金で2食付7500円。松本氏も私もビールが大好きだが、この日はあまりに寒くてビールもはかどらなかった。玄関の室内温度はマイナス九度。おそらく食堂やトイレや廊下の温度も大差はないもよう。

我々は小さいながらも6人部屋だったようで、毛布が6枚あったので、一人3枚ずつ使って寝た。(石油ストーブは9時の就眠時まで使用可能。)
