Hiking Date: June 6th, 2011 (Mon)

Destination (mountain): DaeDunSan (878m)

Hiking course: SooRakRi Parking Lot – Victory Bridge – Victory Tower – SooRak Waterfall – 350 Steps Stairs – MaCheonDae (Peak) – Rocky Downhill Trail – Jangunsa – SooRak Waterfall – Parking Lot (7km, 5.5 hours)

Partner: Alan, Jim, YoungEun, JongMoo and his two sons

[The Seven Taejon hikers,

It was Memorial Day in Korea, so Alan planned another hike to Mt. DaeDunSan for Taejeonhikers. Since it was a national holiday, Alan planned a whole day hike, not a half-day hike this time.

We got together at 10 a.m. at KAIST Main Gate Parking Lot. Jongmoo drove his car, taking two boys with him. The rest of us: Alan, Jim, Yongeun and myself all got into Alan’s car, and we headed for DaeDunSan, SuRak Parking Lot.

A man in charge of the toll parking, seeing the driver (Alan) just allowed us to park without charge. (I bet Jongmoo had to pay for his car since he is not qualified, I mean, “age-wise.”)

Leaving two cars in the parking lot, we began walking toward “Victory Tower” via “Victory Bridge.”

[The start of hiking,

I bet this “Victory” means against North Korea during Korean War.

It was a wide gentle trail even automobiles could run. The real tral starts from Victory Tower along the river.

The trail from Victory Tower to SuRak Waterfall was pleasant gentle trail along the river. The steep “350 Step Stairs” started at the waterfall.

We had a short break at the end of this stairs. It was a observatory deck with benches.

Then we came to the rocky ridge on the mountain. It was past noon, so we had lunch there.

From the place we had lunch to the top of the mountain was just a short walk. It was a fine day and we had great views from the top of the mountain.

[The downhill trail starts with iron steps,

Jongmoo led the down trail but a bit difficult steep trail with wild rocks. It was really hard without sticks. So I shared my sticks with Alan. Yet he slipped several times while walking down until the remains of Janggunsa.

[Alan had a hard time to reach at the regular trail,

From Janggunsa, the trail became much better, and we came back to the waterfall.

[Back to the trail,

We came back to the parking lot from the waterfall, using the same trail for coming up.

We finished our hike at 4:30, so it was 5.5 hour hike. Alan drove us back to KAIST even after this a bit hard hike. I always respect him to plan/carry out Taejonhikers’ hike at his advanced age.

This was my 34th hike for this year.

[Back to the trail,

[On the way back to the parking lot,
