111211 BingGeSan(ビンゲ山빈게산), Sutongol(ストンコル수통골), Daejeon(テジョン대전)

Dec. 11 (Sun) 2011, Cloudy,

Destination (Mountain):

Hiking course: Sutonggol Parking Lot – BingGeSan – The junction of three trails – (Observatory on the ridge to GeumSuBong) – Sutonggol BongGa Restaurant

Partners: 13 (5 USA, 4 Koreans, Ausie, Canadian, Chinese and Dutch.)

This was the 11th hiking with Taejeonhikers I joined this year. This year, Alan kindly planned light hiking in the afternoon of Sunday so that I can join him after attending morning service at the church.

Alan has been working for the institute of nuclear fusion research center for more than 10 years. Since he was born in 1932, he is going to be 80 next year. So his institute decided not to extend the contract for him.

I met him in the fall of the first year when I came to Korea 9 years ago (2003). I seemed to be fell in love with his healthy way of living.

He introduced me “Stammtsich” meeting which has been held on Wednesday. It’s a casual meeting in English and foreigners and Koreans joined this meeting for casual talk in English.

He also introduced “caving” to me. I joined him for caving totally 12 times in the years of 2004 -2006. (Later, I freferred to attending Sunday church services and AhToSan on Saturday.)

I also joined Taejeon hikers hikes which Alan has planned from time to time.

It is really a big shock that he leaves Korea for good. I will miss him in a great deal. But that is the reality of life. We have “hello” and “good-bye” at every moment.

This time, he planned for the light hike to Sutonggol in Daejeon.

I came to this area a dozen of times with Taejeon hikers, or alone.

This time, we had quite an international team: 14 members from 7 countries.

Bingesan is one of the most easiest mountains in Sutonggol. But the course directly from the parking lot to the peak of Bingesan was new to me.

[At "SutongGol BonGa" the duck restaurant,ストンコル本家にて、수통골본가에서 ] The trails in Sutonggol were well facilitated just like other mountains. And there were many people enjoying the light hike.

It was about one hour hike from the parking lot to the top of Bingesan. Jongmu, who is a good hiker, suggested to climb another mountain, GeumSuBong. But it took too much time if we went to all the way to the top. So he suggested to the observatory on the ridge.

Mr. Dongseon Choi and I did not follow Jongmu, but all other hikers followed him. (I was a bit tired after the hike on previous day with AhToSan, and Dongseon was not used to hike more than one hour.)

[Mr. Choi ordered the dinner very well,チェさんがたいへん上手に料理を注文してくれた、최동선씨가 료리를 잘 주문해주었다.]

So Dongseon and I went down to the “duck restaurant” first and waited for others. Thus we had much time to talk each other.

I found out that Dongseon was born in Nov. 1947. So he and I were born in the same year!

He is a retiree from a junior college and enjoys traveling abroad with this wife. How nice!

He is planning to travel to USA next year. I would like to visit Alan in Tenessee next year, too.

We arrived at the duck restaurant called “SuTonGol Bong-Ga” at 4 p.m. and others came to the restaurant at 5 p.m.

I always enjoy the food they provide there. George Furst and Haekyong did not follow Jungmu, but they went home to fetch their dog, Pipi.

They joined the party, but some members went home without attending the party.

[At KAIST Main Gate Parking Lot, KAIST正門駐車場にて、KAIST정문 주차장]

[The last dish was "clear soup with dough flakes" in the jar,

The duck dishes with plenty of vegitable tasted good. We also ordered a kettleful of “makgeolli.”

This was my 64th hike for this year. Alan drove me back to KAIS at about 7 p.m.
