130615 GaRiSan(加里山 가리산1051m), Heungcheon(洪川홍천), Gangwondo(江原道강원도)

Date: June 15 (Sat), 2013, Rain in the morning, then cloudy

Place: GaRiSan(加里山 가리산 1,051m), Heungcheon(洪川 홍천), Gangwondo(강원도)

Course: Heungcheon Pass → Deungjanbong(833.9m) →Saedeugibong → Gasap Pass → Garisan(1051m) →Musoimaljaae → Parking Lot

Partners: 35 AhToSan members

The mountain locates in Heungcheon, Ganwondo, a bit far from Daejeon. So we left the South Gate Parking Lot at 6 am.

I got up at 3:30 am and prepared 4 rice-balls. I left my studio apartment at 5 am and headed for the South Gate in rain.

It stopped raining in the morning. It was my pleasure that more than 30 members attended the hike so that we could afford to hire the big bus.

We arrived at Heungcheon Pass at 10 am. The entrance of the trail was not clear. Alain Delon (the president of AhToSan) and Gongja (the hiking leader) asked the bus driver to stop on the way and confirmed the place.

The entrance of the trail was covered with wild grasses. We had to go over the guardrail and went into the woods.

[We began hiking,

There were many small white moths, looked like butterflies in the whole mountains. They looked fantastic to me.

[A moth like "Small White"、

The most of Garisan was covered with trees and grasses, except around the peak area (it was quite rocky and steep.) It reminded me of Seonginbong on Ulleungdo, just one week ago.

There are many oak trees, most of them quite bog.

The first peak was Deungjanbong(833.9m). Deungjan means oil lamp, but I did not see any shape like “oil lamp.”

[At the first peak, Deungjanbong、

Anyhow, we had “Suzuki Time” and I offered boxes of grapes. It was about 11 am.

[At a short-break,"Suzuki Time", 『スズキタイム』にて、"스즈키 타임"에서]

There were about 10 people with me. Among them, Mogwa (모과Quince) was the slowest hiker, so I tried to follow her (not to be too slow then other hikers.)

The ridge hike after the first peak was rather gentle slope. We walked toward Garisan in the fog.

On the way, when we had a short break, Towa gave me a piece of dried sweet potato which tasted very good.

Along the trail I saw “Aengcho앵초” in Korean (“sakurasoサクラソウ” in Japanese), a kind of primrose and magnolia (함박꽃in Korean and オオヤマレンゲ in Japanese), Geummatari-kko(금마타리 꽃), etc.

A quiet hiker, “Love” taught me this “Geummatari-kko” but I could not find Japanese or English names. However “Matari” means “Ominaeshi オミナエシ” in Japanese. The scientific name of this flower is “ Patrinia scabiosifolia.”

When we came close to the top of Garisan, it became noon. Jeongjeong, a hiking leader, suggested to have lunch at a nice spot along the ridge.

[It was almost noon,

[Lunch on the ridge,

The staff members did not have walky-talky this day. When we finished lunch, and began walking again, soon we found another group led by “Alain Delon” the president of AhToSan and his fellow hikers having lunch there.

“Alain Delon” said that they were waiting for us, but gave up and began to eat lunch with his fellow hikers.

After having lunch, we soon became the peaks of Garisan. There were three peaks at Garisan, and it was very rocky peaks.

[Near the top of the mountain,

The first spot was the rock called “Eolgul Pawi.” “Eolgul” means face and the rock looked like a person’s side face.

[Mogwa in front of "Eolgul Pawi,「オルグル岩」の前の「カリン」、"얼굴 바위"앞에 "모과"]

I put my bag at the first peak and went to the 2nd and 3rd peak. After taking pictures at these peaks, I returned to the 1st peak and then continued hiking.

[At the top of Garisan,

After passing these peaks, we came to the steep rocky down-trail. Two AhToSan hikers, “Alain Delon” and “Deolkodeong” found Umbilicaria esculenta or "Iwatakeイワタケ" in Japanese and "seogibeoseot석이버섯" in Korean. They are edible mushrooms, so these two hikers took time to pick them up.

[Umbilicaria esculenta、

While waiting for them, Grace, Minju and Mogwa began having fruits and some cakes at a foot of a big pine tree.

[Short break with food,

“Deolkodeong” showed a bag of this mushroom, then Grace took all of them by saying, I love mushrooms. I wondered if she cooked them and brings to AhToSan next time.

After having this break, I was left behind other hikers. When I finally arrived at the parking lot at 15:15, most of the hikers were having “wrap-up party” already.

A person in charge of “wrap-up party” was Mancha, who was famous as a good cook. As I expected, she cooked food for the party very well. The main menu was “Duruchigi” with pork. It was a spicy food and she made a lot of it.

[At the wrap-up party,

I enjoyed “Duruchigi” and Deongdeongju, traditional Korean wine very much.

We finished the wrap-up party at around 4 pm and went back to Daejeon by 8 pm.

It was my 28th hike for this year and my 318th hike of AhToSanregular hike.

[The map of Garisan,

[A group picture before the hike,

[A moth like "Small White"、

[At a short-break,"Suzuki Time", 『スズキタイム』にて、"스즈키 타임"에서]

[At the first peak, Deungjanbong、

[A piece of dried sweet-potato,

[Clove,

[Self-heal or Heal-all, ウツボグサ(靫草)、꿀풀]

[It was almost noon,

[Another group people were having lunch,

[At the top of Garisan,

[Two hikers were picking up "Umbilicaria esculenta",

[Short break with food,
