A Stammtisch (German: "regular table") is a scheduled informal meeting group at a specially reserved table in a beer hall or other establishment in German-speaking Europe, which can be held on a weekly or monthly basis. The table usually has a polished sheen from frequent use, and is frequently marked off with a sign, banner, or ashtray.

When I came to Daejeon, Korea in 2003, I met Alan, an American scientist at a certain foreigners’ meeting, he introduced “Stammtisch” in Daedeok Valley, Daejeon.

Since Alan introduced me to the meeting, until the end of 2011, when Alan left Korea for good, he and I were the core members of Stammtsich, though the place and time changed from time to time.

Presently, Jim from Australia and Marta (from Ukraine) and her Korean husband, BJ, and I have been the core members and we regularly meet at an international lobby at W2-1 Building in KAIST on Wednesday.

However, the 3rd week of November, Bernardo, used to be another regular member, back in 2010, came to Daejeon from Seoul in order to join an AhToSan hiking on Saturday.

Bernardo originally from Mexcico had been in Daejeon for a couple of years, then he worked at Shanghai, China for 2 years, and then he got a new job in Seoul for one year.

So we changed the date and place of Stammtisch, to Sugar Pie, which the owner of the shop, used to open her restaurant named “Pasta House” for Stammtisch for several years until 2010.

I invited my Russian friend, Elena, and a Chinese friend, Eric, to this meeting that evening.

We met at Banseok Station of Daejeon Subway at 8 pm, and went to Sugar Pie all together.

Elera is from Krasnoyarsk, a city in central part of Russia this year, and joined Taejeonhikers hike as well as AhToSan hiking.

She is a Russian teacher at Baejae University.

Marta is from Lviv, western part of Ukraine, and being married a Korean guy, BJ and they have a lovely 3-year old daughter, Hanna.

Amy is a Korean lady who joins Stammtisch from time to time. She is also a member of Taejeonhikers.

Bernardo arrived at Sugar Pie at almost 9 pm. But unfortunately, the owner of Sugar Pie, Hee Sun was busy that night and she could not join us.

However, her business seemed thriving, and now she has 3 staff members in black suits with neckties. They reminded me of “Pinky and Killers” a popular vocal group back in late 1960s in Japan.

Bernardo told me that one of 3 staff members was Hee Sun’s younger brother.

After having self-introduction and light conversation, we left Sugar Pie and 9:30 pm.

Bernardo stayed at a hotel in Yuseong, and he joined AhToSan hiking to Daegue next day.

スタムティッシュ( Stammtisch)というのはドイツ語で「予約席」という意味である。

私が韓国へ来たばかりの頃(2003年中ごろ)、アメリカ人のアランに会い、彼に紹介されて「スタムティッシュ」の常連となった。

以来、開催日と場所は数回変わったが、アランが帰国した2011年12月まではアランと私が中心となった。

開催場所はKAIST横の「パスタハウス」であったが、パスタハウスのオーナーのヒソンが店を現在の盤石へ移し、店の名も「シュガーパイ」として以来、スタムティッシュの会合場所はKAISTのW2-1館の「国際ロビー」で、主要メンバーはマルタとBJ夫妻、及びオーストラリア人のジムと私になった。

この日、かつてスタムティッシュの常連で、中国の上海に2年間勤務し、今月からソウルに新しい職場をみつけ韓国へ戻ってきたメキシコ人ベルナルドがアトサンの登山に参加するため、大田に来た。

そのため、スタムティッシュの会合日を水曜日から金曜日に替え、場所もKAISTではなく、「シュガーパイ」にすることにした。

オーナーのヒソンに盤石駅の出口番号を聞くと1番ということで、盤石駅でエレナ及びエリックと待ち合わせ、シュガーパイへ向かった。

シュガーパイは今回で3回目か4回目になるが、地下鉄で行くのは初めてだ。

だが、前回、トレイシーの送別会で、終わってからビュッフェ式レストランに寄り、それから地下鉄に乗った覚えがある。

シュガーパイにはマルタとエイミーがすでにいて我々を待っていた。

ベルナルドは8時ごろ大田駅に到着して、地下鉄に乗り換えてきたため、シュガーパイ到着は8時58分だった。

しかし、ヒソンが多忙のためシュガーパイに不在だったことは残念だった。

シュガーパイのスタッフは黒ずくめの男性3人で、そのうちの一人はヒソンの弟と言う事だ。

この男性スタッフの衣装は、ピンキーとキラーズの男性シンガーのようで、なかなかいかすスタイルである。

中国人のエリックは通常、水曜日は勉強会があるのでスタムティッシュには参加しないが、テジョンハイカーズの常連である。

エリックは山東省の出身だが日本語は独学でかなりできる。アトサンにも時々参加する。

エレナは培材大学でロシア語を教えているロシア人でアトサンのペースに会う強力なハイカーである。

エレナの出身はロシアのほぼ中央に位置するクラスノヤルスク市で、今年韓国へ来たばかりである。

韓国人のイケメンBJと結婚したウクライナ人のマルタの故郷はウクライナ西部のリヴィウ市で、ウィキペディアによると人口83万の美しい都市である。

今回集まった6人全員が異なる国籍であるのは興味深いが、これはスタムティッシュの特徴でもある。

翌日ハイキングもあることで、今回の会合は9時半で終わり、マルタはエイミーが送り、ベルナルドとエレナとエリックと私は地下鉄に向かった。
