Resuming of IDP (International Dinner Party)

In Japan, Nov. 22 is the day of good couple. In Japanese, “1122” can be read “ii-fufu” which means "good" “fu-fu” or “man and his wife.” It is a play on words.

I know many good couples among my friends. One of them; “Grace and Barnabas” a pastor and his wife.

They used to open their home for foreigners, mostly students studying in KAIST or other universities in Daejeon.

Grace herself has an experience of studying abroad and had experienced difficulties esp. foreign foods.

So she cooked non-Korean dishes and provided for foreigners as volunteer basis.

I joined this IDP soon after I began living in Daejeon back in 2004, and used to enjoy her dishes and the international meeting until late 2009.

Actually, I met many non-Korean friends here and invited to AhToSan hiking club until 2009.

They stopped this IDP meeting when they began another activities at KAIST, but I had been hoping of resuming this IDP.

So, I was very happy to hear that they restarted IDP again.

On Nov. 22nd, after watching “Sumo” on internet TV, I hurried Hanpit Apartment to visit the home of Grace and Barnarbas.

I was the first guest on that day, then many foreigners came one by one, or a group by group.

The guests are mostly students and professors at KAIST and other institutes.

Grace provided various foods: Main dish of the day was spaghetti meat source.

After having dinner, Grace took the role of MC and each participant introduced him or herself.

Grace requested to add statement that he/she is satisfied with the current job/situation after introduction.

Then Jim played the ukulele and YeJee played the flute and Grace played the ocarina.

We sang several songs including “Arirang.”

Then Grace appointed several people to sing a song of his/her country.

I was impressed with a Mongolian song by Tumee, an Iranian song by Mariam and a soul music song by Newman from Nigeria.

Newman testified his faith in Jesus by telling his personal experience of being healed his troubled kidney while singing his song.

When I introduced myself, I invited hiking with AhToSan as I expected. Then two girls came to me and wrote their e-mail addresses.

I was happy to send them AhToSan hiking info, but they were busy studying hard in weekends so far.

I hope I can find new hiking friends at IDP like I did before.

The next day (Nov. 23), I went to Chuwolsan with AhToSan hikers.

日本では11月22日はごろ合わせから「いい夫婦の日」である。

私が知る韓国人の「いい夫婦」である「グレイス」及び「バルナバ」から連絡があり、彼らが2009年以前、自宅で開催していたIDP(国際夕食会)を再開するという。

これはかつてシンガポールへ留学した経験のあるグレイスが現地の食事があわずに苦労したと言う自分の体験から、主に外国人を自宅に招待して多様な食事を提供するボランティア活動である。

私は韓国に住みだしてまもない、2004年当時、バルナバが奉仕していたハンピ教会のハングル教室に通っていたことからグレイスに招かれ、毎週金曜日の度においしい食事とさまざまの国籍の人々と会えることを楽しみにしていた。

実際、このIDPで知り合ってからアトサン山岳会に誘った外国人たちも多く、また再開されると聞いて喜んだ。

この日はキーホールTVと協会のネット配信で、大相撲の13日目の取り組みで稀勢の里が日馬富士を破るのをみてから自転車でハンピアパートへ出かけた。

2009年12月以来だから4年ぶりだ。6時半からということだったが、6時半に来たのは私だけである。

ベトナムの二人は食事後すぐに見えなくなった。せめて自己紹介だけでも聞きたかった。

夕食後、全員が自己紹介したが、実に15カ国から、主催者を入れて20人である。

自己紹介と共に、簡単な近況と現在自分がしていることに満足しているかどうかをコメントした。

次にジムがウクレレ、礼智がフルート、グレイスがオカリナを演奏。何曲かは一緒に歌うことを誘われたが、歌詞なしで歌えるのは「アリラン」1曲だけだった。

この夜歌った者で印象に残ったのはモンゴルのテュミの歌、イランのマリアムの歌、及びナイジェリアのニューマンの歌だ。

特に最後に歌ったニューマンは、自分が肝臓の病気が癒された証しと関連して歌ったため強烈な印象を与えた。

最後に私がハイキングを誘うと2人の若い女性が情報を欲しいとメルアドを書いた。一人はカザフスタンのアンナでもう一人はシンガポールのゾイと思われる。



今後第2及び第4金曜日に開催すると言うのでその通りに行われば私はあと6回、出席する機会がある。
