Place: BJ and Marta’s Sweet Apartment at Hanpit Apt.

BJ & Marta are to leave for Ukuraine with Hanna for Christmas. So, before their departure, they opened their home for Stammtisch meeting.

When I got out of my studio apartment, it was raining a little bit. But I carried a small umbrella and began to walk to Hanpit Apartment.

When I came to about the middle point to the apartment, it began raining hard. My small umbrealla was not good enough to prevent the rain. Too bad, I got soaked when I arrived at Hanpit Plaza.

Anyway, Amy and Haekyun and Jim came to the place, and we went to BJ and Marta’s apartment together.

Their apartment is on the 10th floor, a cozy sets of rooms. BJ welcomed us with Hanna.

They prepared a lot of food and drinks, such as pizza, cake, role bread, red wine, Suntry premium beer and a Korean wine made from, Rubus coreanus berry (복분자딸기).

It’s just like the red wine they prepared, sweet and nice.

I brought “Ogok-cookies” one of my favorite Korean commercial products.

But Haekyung brought a toy computer for Hanna, which she liked very much.

There was Christmas music being played by PC in the living room. I noticed a CD case with a musician on it.

BJ said that he was Marta’s uncle who was a laureate of the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition in Paris (1983).

I also noticed a beautiful plate on the wall. It was a product from Saint Petersburg.

BJ visited there during the summer, and he experienced “White Night” or bright night.

I remember that after “Collapse of the Soviet Union” they changed its name “ Leningrad” to its old name “Saint Petersburg” in 1924 or before.

I learned that Vladimir Putin is from this city by Wikipedia.

Then Marta brought up the topic of the demonstration against Ukraine government at Kiev, their capital.

When President Viktor Yanukovych postponed the joining EU, hundreds of thousands of anti-government demonstrators came to Independence Square in Kiev.

She showed the vido of demonstrators by youtube. The average temperature in Kiev in December is -2.3℃, and it is getting colder now. Yet almost 1 million people were gathering at the square. Marta said her parents were supporting for the demonstrators.

Now we bagan talking about Chernobyl disaster since it is in Ukraine. It happned in 1986 during the peiod of USSR. Yet, they could not solve the problem, esp. for health problem influenced not only in Ukraine, but much wider areas.

Naturally we began talking about Fukusima disaster, and the problem of nuclear wastes, as well.

Since BJ works for the nuclear energy related institute, he also knows the similar problem in Korea, esp. for the deal with nuclear wastes. He said it was yet-unsolved homework, but Korean government recently decided to increase the number of nuclear reactors more.

Now we began talking about health problems, esp. the recent increase of cancer. It may be cause of destruction of environment.

One of monks at the temple he goes, recently was diagnosed with leukemia. It is a blood cancer. One of my old Korean friend passed away because of leukemia two years ago.

Then Haekyun brought up an interesting topic, about a book which she recently read; “How not to be Killed by Doctors” written by a Japanese.

It sold half a million in Japan, and it was translated into Korean language.

According to the author, doctors were spoiled by Drug manufacturers, and they tend to give unnecessary medicines to their patients.

Wow it sound dangerous. I ordered the book and will read it when I go back to Japan.

Well the topic became heavier and heavier, and Marta cut cakes for changing the atmosphere.

I wonder what kind of theme song would be picked up for Tokyo Olympic 2020.

I usually leave Stammtisch meeting at 9 pm, but we kept talking that night.

BJ and Marta offered a ride to Shinseongdong, so I extended my stay for 30 minutes.

It had been stopped raining, but it was much faster than walking.

I thanked them for the ride, and came to my room at 9:40 pm.

BJとマルタはハンナを連れてクリスマス前にウクライナへ旅立つ。その前にということで彼らの家でスタムティッシュを開いてくれた。

生憎の雨で、それも新城洞の自分のワンルームを出たときは大したことはなかったのに、ハンピアパートへのちょうど中間ごろ、本降りになってしまった。

日本の100円ショップで買った小型の傘ではどうしようもなく、待ち合わせ場所のハンピプラザに着く前にずぶぬれになってしまった。

それでも彼らのアパートに到着するとその暖かい雰囲気で外の悪天候は忘れた。

テーブルの上にはピザやケーキやロールパンなどのほか、赤ワインやBJが友人からもらったという自家製のボップンジャ(복분자覆盆子)酒、日本のサントリービール・プレミアムなどがあった。

サントリープレミアムは私の好物である。また、「覆盆子」は日本語では「トックリイチゴ」というそうだが、日本ではあまりみかけない。この実で作ったワインは赤ワインに似て甘口である。

私が持参したのは自分が好きな「五穀クッキー」だが、ヘギョンは彼らの3歳になるハンナにおもちゃのパソコンをプレゼントした。このパソコンはキーボードをたたくと音声が出るようでハンナは断然気に入った。

リビングルームにはパソコンで音楽がかかっていて、ある男性ピアニストのCDケースが飾ってあった。このピアニストの名前は Volodymyr Vynnytskyと言い、マルタの叔父さんにあたるそうだ。

また、ハンナの部屋には別のパソコンがあり、ハンナの好きなアニメが上映されていた。

さて、ウィキペディアによると Volodymyr Vynnytskyは1983年に毎年パリで開催されるロン＝ティボー国際コンクールのピアノ部門で入賞し、以来、NYに居を置いて国際的に活躍している音楽家である。

彼は最近チェロ奏者と結婚し、二人の合奏をYoutubeでしばらく鑑賞した。

次の話題は壁にかかっていたサンクトペテルブルグの円盤である。BJは仕事で訪問したそうだが、その時は白夜の時期であり、夜中の2時になっても明るかったそうだ。

この都市が1991年のソ連崩壊後、レニングラードから1924年以前の名前に戻されたことは記憶に新しい。また、現在のウラジミール・プーチン首相がこの都市出身であることはウィキペディアで知った。

この後、話題は最近のウクライナ情勢に移った。ウクライナのヤヌコービッチ大統領率いる現政権がロシアの圧力に屈してEU加盟を見送ったため、数10万人のデモ隊がウクライナの首都キエフの独立広場に集結して抗議集会を開催しているのである。

マルタはその様子をYoutubeで実況している場面をパソコンで我々に見せてくれた。キエフの12月の平均気温は-2.3℃であり日々さらに寒くなっている。マルタの両親も親EU反ロシアのデモ隊に同情的で支援をしているという。

また、ウクライナでは1986年のチェルノブイリ原発事故以来の健康被害がまだ克服されておらず、当然のことながら、2011年3月の福島の事故についても話題になった。

ジムの通っている寺のお坊さんが、健康に留意した生活をしているにもかかわらず、最近急激に体調を崩し、「白血病」と診断されたという。お坊さんはブルーベリーが好物で輸入されたものを食していたがどうもそれがウクライナ産あるいはチェルノブイリの事故の影響をうけた地域が原産だという。

話題は健康の話から薬害の話へ移った。ヘギョンが最近読んだ本のタイトルが「医者に殺されない47の心得 医療と薬を遠ざけて、元気に、長生きする方法」というタイトルだと言う。

内容は医者と薬剤メーカーが結託して患者に不必要な薬剤を大量に処方しているという話である。この本場は日本人が書いたもので日本でベストセラーになっており、韓国でも翻訳本が発売されているというとである。

私もこの本を買って読んでみることにした。

話題はかなり重苦しいものとなったが、ここで、マルタがケーキを切って、みなに配った。

音楽もハンナがお気に入りの「手に手を握って」というソウルオリンピック主題歌をかけた。マルタの叔父の音楽同様、Youtubeで動画を見ながら、この歌を聞けるのは大変良い。

さて、2020年の2度目の東京オリンピックではどんなテーマソングが歌われるのだろうか。

私はいつもスタムティッシュの集いは9時に辞することにしているが、この夜は話題がはずみ、なかなか終わらない。BJとマルタが私を新城洞まで車で送ってくれるということになって、約30分延長した。

雨はほとんど止んでいたが、歩けば40分かかる距離で、車では10分もかからない。ありがたく送ってもらってワンルームに戻った。
