DR#199 “Christmas Letter of 2013”

The High Lights of 2013

My wife and I were at a mountain lodge in Jigokudani (地獄谷Hell Valley) in Nagano Prefecture on Jan. 1, 2013, together with our Australian friend, Tracy. We enjoyed seeing “snow monkeys” in hot spring there.

I traveled around Hokuriku, Tohoku and North Kanto in January, taking advantage of a special discount of “Otonano-Kyujitu” Club. I saw my old friends in Fukui and Toyama, then visited Mr. & Mrs. Barkman in Tagajo, Miyagi Prefecture, and my relatives in Fukushima and Kita-Ibaragi, hit by the big tsunami in 2011 area.

I traveled in North America in February, first, my good friend in Korea, Alan England in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We climbed 2 mountains in Tennessee. Then I visited Mr. & Mrs. Rupp in Rochester, and flew to Boston, after seeing the Niagara Fall, and saw Pat & Tamotsu in Boston. After spending two nights in Boston, I flew to Seattle, and met my young friend, Chris. Then I took Amtrak to Vancouver, Washington, to see Mr. & Mrs. Walter. Then went back to Seattle and stayed at Lois and Craig’s home. It was a wonderful journey to visit all my friends in USA.

I taught seniors Japanese from March to June, as the 1st semester at Daedeok University.　It was my last chance to teach the first semester. During the semester, my wife, together with her 8 friends, visited Korea. I guided them around Busan and Gyonju, esp. Gyonju, the ancient capital of Shilla (57 BC – 935 AD). It was a beautiful season of cherry blossoms.

I walked more than 30 km a day in Mt. Jiri(智異山) with AhToSan hikers in May, and went to Ulleungdo (鬱陵島) and Dokdo. I even went to Tsushima (対馬) with Korean tourists and enjoyed a hike on the island.

During the summer vacation, my wife and I went to West Australia for the first time, and visited Tracey. We drove together to Margaret River, and stayed a lodge on farm, visiting a cave and taking “Wale-watching” boat there.

After spending a week with our son’s family in Chatswood, New South Wales, we went back to Japan. I climbed big mountains such as Mt. Fuji, Mt. Gassan, Mt. Myoko and Mt. Hakkoda in Japan.

I came back to Korea in August, and from September to December, I taught sophomore and senior as my last chance. More than half seniors were already out of the university. They had been succeeded to get jobs and entered in internship training.

During the 2nd semester, my old day friend, Mr. S came to Korea from Toyama. He is a big fan of “Winter Sonata” a Korean TV drama. We took a package tour to visit Namiseom, and Chuncheon, visiting the drama-related locations. Mr. S is also a good hiker, and we climbed Mt. Gyeryon in Daejeon together. He liked Korean culture very much, and began studying Korean language in Toyama.

I participated AhToSan planned regular hiking 336th times since I joined the club in 2004. AhToSan celebrates its 10th anniversary and I am the hiker who went hiking with them most frequently.

But the time when I leave Korea for good is getting closer. My working visa will be expired at the end of March next year, and so far, no extension expected.

I deeply thank for those who invited me to ETRI as a visiting researcher in 2003. I could work at ETRI very comfortably for 3 years.

I also thank for those who made it possible for me to work at Daedeok University as a part-time Japanese teacher since 2007 until this day.

I may visit Korea from time to time and may climb more mountains, but not as a resident, rather as a traveler after March, 2014.

2013年のハイライト

2013年は長野県地獄谷の後楽園という温泉で、韓国で知り合ったオーストラリア人の友人、トレイシーと妻と３人で大晦日に宿泊して迎えました。その前日は温泉に入る野生のサル、「スノーマンキー」を見学しました。

１月下旬には「大人の休日」の割引切符を使って北陸・東北・北関東を旅行しました。北陸では大学部の同級生と再会し、東北では宮城県多賀城で復興支援と宣教の働きをされているバークマン先生ご夫妻と訪ね、北関東では父の故郷の北茨城の平潟港を訪ねました。

２月は米国を旅し、まずテネシー州オークリッジでアランと再会、大雪の中ロチェスターへ飛びラップご夫妻と再会、その後、ナイアガラの滝を見物してからバッファロー空港からボストンへ飛び、パットさんと保さんに会い、次はシアトルへ行き、韓国で知り合ったクリス宅で２泊後、ワシントン州バンクーバーでウォルター先生ご夫妻にお会いした。最後にシアトルへ戻ってクレイグとロイスのお宅に泊まり、彼らの教会の礼拝にも出席して韓国へ戻りました。

３月から６月までは大徳大学の一学期で、３年生に技術日本語を教えましたが、この年が私が教員を務める最後の年です。この間、４月の中旬に妻が友人８人を連れて訪韓、釜山・慶州の旅を企画し、桜の花が満開の慶州を案内しました。

5月6月は、智異山縦走30kmの山行や、鬱陵島や竹島及び対馬への旅行を楽しみました。

7月の夏休みには例年通り一時帰国し、妻と二人で西オーストラリア、パースに帰国しているトレイシーを訪ねマーガレットリバーへドライブしてファームスティをしました。その後、日本へ戻って８回目となる富士山をはじめ、月山、妙高、八甲田山などを登山しました。

9月から12月までは私が教える大徳大学での最後の二学期を過ごしました。学生は２年と３年を担当し、３年は学期の途中で次々と就職が決まって学窓を去りました。韓国も就職難の折、在学中に次々と就職が決まるのは大徳大学ならではの強みでしょう。

この学期の途中で１月の北陸旅行で30年ぶりに再会したS氏が訪韓し、二人で南怡島や春川をめぐる冬ソナツアーに参加しました。S氏とは夏の妙高に続いて、今度はテジョンの鶏龍山にも登山しました。S氏は帰国後に韓国語の学習を始めたのもうれしい知らせです。

アトサン山岳会の定期山行に参加した回数は先週で336回になり、今年あと２回参加すれば338回となります。アトサンも創立10周年を迎え、最初から参加している会員は数人しかいません。その一人が私です。

しかし、韓国で暮らすのも今年が最後です。１月は例年通り一時帰国しますが、1/24には韓国へ戻り、現在のビザが切れる３月末までにこちらの生活を整理して、帰国する予定です。

来年４月からは生活の基盤は11年ぶりに日本へもどし、韓国へは旅行者として３カ月に１度ぐらい訪問したいと考えています。

この10年間、健康に韓国で過ごせたこと、多くの山々に登山できたこと、感謝の念に堪えません。
